NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Township is looking for residents to serve on a committee to help implement new state storm-water regulations in the township.
Trustee Chairman Shirley Heck said anyone interested should call the township.
In other business at their meeting Wednesday, trustees agreed to advertise for an additional full-time patrolman. The position is new and will bring the township force to six full-time and five part-time officers.
Trustees approved paying MacIntosh Oil of Akron $4,000 to apply an asphalt emulsion dust control to Brungard Road. Trustees also approved purchase of six life vests and six rope bags for $1,120 for the fire department for water rescues.
Fire at castings plant
SALEM -- Firefighters put out a blaze at Quaker City Castings Inc., 310 Euclid Ave.
They were called to the business about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after a fire started among pallets and cardboard in a warehouse storage area. The fire's cause is undetermined.
The company, which employs 92 people, was not significantly affected by the fire and is operating normally, Neil Poffenberger, plant manager, said this morning. He estimated loss at about $800.
Special Olympics
SALEM -- People with mental and physical disabilities will compete in the Columbiana County Special Olympics Association's eighth annual Spring Games.
The free and public event is set for 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Reilly Stadium along East Pershing Street, east of South Lincoln Avenue.
Wanted man arrested
LISBON -- Village police arrested an 18-year-old Cleveland man wanted on warrants issued by the U.S. Marshals Service and by Cuyahoga County.
Chancelor Jordan is charged by federal authorities with a probation violation and a weapons offense. He is charged by federal and Cuyahoga County authorities with drug trafficking, said Brian McLaughlin, Columbiana County Drug Task Force director.
Jordan was arrested about 8 p.m. Tuesday at a Beaver Street business, where he had gone to buy something. Jordan has family in the Lisbon area.
He was in the county jail this morning.
Water supply hearing
GROVE CITY, Pa. --The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection wants to hear any complaints borough residents have about their water supply.
The agency will conduct a watershed assessment hearing on the borough's drinking water sources at 7 p.m. May 21 in the municipal building, 123 W. Main St.
Grove City gets its water for 8,200 people from three wells. The goal of the hearing is to support the development of local voluntary water protection programs.
Buggy crash injures 2
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- State police said two Amish women escaped serious injury when the horse pulling their buggy bolted on Bethel-New Wilmington Road in Wilmington Township.
Police said Mary S. Byler, 28, of New Wilmington, was driving the buggy north around 4:25 p.m. Wednesday and had reached the intersection with Pulaski-Mercer Road when the horse bolted and the buggy rolled onto its side, throwing Byler into a ditch.
The buggy was dragged about 500 feet before slamming into a parked car.
A passenger in the buggy, Sally A. Yoder, 23, also of New Wilmington, was able to get out of the buggy as it was being dragged, police said. She and Byler were treated at UPMC Horizon in Farrell.
The horse suffered minor injuries, police said.
Civil War encampment
BROOKFIELD -- The 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry will be in their Civil War encampment at Brookfield Middle School from Tuesday through May 22.
The encampment that includes tents, muskets, cooking pits and covered wagons from the early 1860s is sponsored by the school's student council.
Uniformed re-enactors will show pupils and the public what the life of a soldier was like during the war, including food, lifestyle, roles of women and children and transportation.
The public can visit after school hours.
