Meeting rescheduled
VIENNA -- Mathews Board of Education has rescheduled Wednesday's regular meeting for 6 p.m. March 25 in the board office at Cortland Bank, 4434B Warren-Sharon Road, Vienna Center.
Employment and compensation will be discussed, with the agenda items to be addressed about 6:30.
Lecture on credit repair
NILES -- The lecture series "Law at the Library" will begin Wednesday at the Niles McKinley Memorial Library.
Atty. Jonathan Politi will discuss "Credit Repair and How to Face Debt Problems" at 6:30 p.m. He will share strategies on dealing with debt problems and ways to repair a damaged credit record.
The eight-session series continues at 6:30 p.m. March 26 with "Simple Estate Planning to Avoid Probate."
Both programs are free, but reservations are required by calling (330) 652-1704 ext. 202.
Recycling move
GIRARD -- Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District has removed the recycling drop-off container at 15 Davis St. because nonrecyclable materials were being disposed in it.
The district is seeking a new location.
Managing retirement
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. Harvey L. Sterns, director of the Institute for Life-Span Development and Gerontology and professor of psychology at the University of Akron, will present "Self Management of Career and Retirement" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Youngstown State University.
Sterns, research professor of gerontology and co-director of the Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, will speak in the Ohio Room of the Kilcawley Center.
The event, sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Mental Health Association, is free.
Community study
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University's Center for Human Services Development and its associate director, Ricky George, were awarded $39,422 by The Community Corp. to provide a detailed community needs assessment for the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way.
It will gauge the community's perception of the needs and assets of the community and will assist the United Way in identifying the key issues within the community.
Lawsuit filed
BOARDMAN -- Sgt. Nick Levinsky has filed a lawsuit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court disputing the results of a promotional exam given in the police department between April and June 2002.
In the suit, Levinsky says he was denied a promotion within the department because he was not given appropriate points on the exam for his years of service. He was hired in 1979.
The suit names the township civil service commission, trustees and Lt. Donald Lamping. Lamping received a promotion after the exam.
Victim critical
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dino Brown, 17, of East Judson Avenue, was in critical condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Brown was shot at 5:30 p.m. Monday on Summer Street.
A few minutes later, Terry Briskey, 17, of East Boston Avenue, flagged police down on Willis Avenue and turned himself in and said the gun was in his coat pocket.
Police also found a bag containing six packets of suspected crack cocaine on Briskey, reports show.
Briskey was arrested and taken to the juvenile justice center to face charges of felonious assault, aggravated trafficking in crack and carrying a concealed weapon.
Auto thefts
BOARDMAN -- Multiple car thefts in the township continued last weekend with the theft of four cars.
Three of the cars stolen were 1990s model General Motors cars, and one was a 1987 Mercury. One of the cars was taken from the Southern Park Mall parking lot, and the other three were stolen from outside the owners' homes.
