MiniPage Teacher's Guide
MiniPage activities meet many state and national educational standards.
This week's standards: Pupils understand how the country establishes order and security. (Social Studies: Power, Authority and Governance) Pupils understand the role of institutions in furthering both continuity and change. (Social Studies: Individuals, Groups and Institutions)
Activities:
1. Draw a picture of National Guard groups helping a community in an emergency, such as a flood or hurricane. Write a story to go with your picture.
2. Talk to older family members and friends who may have served in the National Guard or the reserves, or who knew someone who served in one of those groups. Ask them why people choose to go into the Guard or the Reserve. Try to find at least five reasons people choose to serve their country in this way.
3. Who provides protection for citizens in your local community? Find a newspaper article about a local law enforcement officer on the job. Explain how the officer helps keep you and other citizens safe.
4. Find a newspaper article in which the president makes a comment about the people who serve in the military. What does he say about their service? How does he express the appreciation of the nation for the work of the military?
5. Use reference books, history books and the Internet to learn more about the battles at Lexington and Concord in 1775. Use these questions to guide your research: Who were the people who made up the minutemen? What other jobs did they have? At what time of day did the fighting take place? How long did the battles last? How did the action of the minutemen affect the fight for independence?
