Activities planned in July at Mill Creek Metroparks.
Wednesday: 7 p.m., 7-UP Summerfest Concert Series with The River Saints (contemporary blues). Judge Morley Pavilion. Lawn seating. Free.
Thursday: 10, 10:45 or 11:30 a.m. Two-year-olds and their favorite adults are invited to explore a coral reef and its inhabitants through a story and dramatic play. Call (330) 740-7107.
Thursday through Aug. 21: 2-3 p.m. On Thursdays through the summer, a naturalist will accompany the passenger boat on 20-minute tours of Lake Glacier. Register by calling (330) 740-7107 on the Monday before planned day of attendance. Not for organized groups. Meet at Lake Glacier Boathouse. Fee: 50 cents per person.
July 5, 12, 19, 26: 9 a.m. to noon. Chore Time at the Farm. It's chore time at the MetroParks Farm and the public can lend a hand.
July 6: 1-5 p.m. A lesson on where some of the fibers used in making clothing come from. Participants can make a patriotic bead bracelet using wool. Wagon rides will be given every half-hour between 1:30-4:30 p.m. Barns will be open to see the animals.
July 6: 10 a.m. Discover the diversity of species found in and around the Lily Pond, then hike along Lake Glacier to learn about the natural and cultural history of this area. Meet at the Lily Pond. About three miles, moderate difficulty with steep terrain.
July 7-10: 8:30-10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.-noon, Junior Golf Camp at Par 3 golf course. For ages 8-18, six hours of instruction. Fee: $25 residents, $35 nonresidents. Register at the Par 3 golf course in person or call (330) 740-7114.
July 8-11: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children who have completed grades two and three will investigate nature, big and small. Discover different habitats and the creatures living there. Campers will hike up to two miles each day. Registration and fee due at Ford Nature Center by July 1. Fee: $40 residents, $50 nonresidents.
July 8, 15, 22, 29: 5:30-7 p.m. Yoga in the Fellows Riverside Gardens, taught by Heidi Suraci. Tea will be served after class. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $54 R, $72 NR.
July 9: 10 a.m. People for MetroParks Tournament at Mill Creek Golf Course, North Course. Entry Fee: $50, includes green fees, cart, prizes & amp; lunch. Register at the Pro Shop.
July 9: 7 p.m. Yellow Creek Concert in Struthers. Music provided by the Jim Frank Trio.
July 9: 7 p.m. 7-UP Summerfest Concert Series with Ritmo Carebeno (Latin/salsa). Judge Morley Pavilion. Lawn seating. Free.
July 10: 10-11 a.m. or 1-2 p.m. Garden Safari. With picture clues in hand, preschoolers 3 to 5 and their adult companions will search for "animals" hiding their namesake plants. Each child will receive a lamb's ear plant to take home. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $5.
July 10: 6-7:30 p.m. Kayaking at Lake Newport. Kayak safety information and instructions will be given. Meet at the East Newport Boat Launch. Minors 11-17 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Call (330) 740-7107 for registration information. Fee: $12 per person for residents, $15 per person nonresidents; second person in tandem kayak, half price.

July 11: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Botanical artist Ann Payne will conduct a workshop demonstrating colored pencil techniques used for botanical illustration of plant specimens. This workshop is offered in conjuction with the International Exhibition of Botanical Art on display. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $42 ($33 for Friends of Fellows Riverside Garden members), includes boxed lunch and some materials.
July 11: 1:30-3 p.m. Children 6 and older will hear fairy lore and methods to attract fairies into the garden while planting enchanting fairy container gardens. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $14.
July 12: 10 a.m. start. Buick Scramble, North Course of Mill Creek Golf Course. Entry fee: $75 with USGA handicap, $85 without USGA handicap; includes green fees, cart, prizes and lunch. Register at the pro shop.
July 12: 9 a.m. Join us as we hike through Yellow Creek Park to see, hear and learn about Ohio's state symbols. Meet at Captain John Struthers Pavilion, Struthers.
July 12: 9 p.m. Beneath the soon-to-be full moon, we'll walk along the MetroParks Bikeway to one of the MetroParks' newest acquisitions, the Brocker Preserve. Meet at Kirk Road Trailhead. About four miles, moderate difficulty due to length.
July 12-13: 2 p.m. Civil War Skirmish. Each day the United States Colored Troops will battle Confederate soldiers on the Covered Bridge.
July 13: 1-5 p.m. An explanation of the farm's wheat cultivation and harvest. See how equipment is operated to harvest this important crop. Barns will be open to see the animals.
July 13: 9:30-11 a.m. Beat the summer heat on this morning voyage on Lake Glacier. Focus will be on the history of this area and wildlife, too. Meet at Lake Glacier Boathouse. July 13: 1-5 p.m. Have you witnessed the dedication of the Volney Rogers statue in 1920? Do you have fond memories of family picnics? The park will record your recollections using an interview technique called oral history. Call (330) 740-7107 to schedule an interview appointment.

July 16: 8:30-10 a.m. Take a brisk walk in Fellows Riverside Gardens to observe mint plants in the herb beds. Savor a healthy breakfast of fruit and muffins afterward while learning more about mints. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $6 R, $8 NR.
July 16: 7 p.m. 7-UP Summerfest Concert Series with Frank Gallo-Rocky Chirchiglia (songs of Italy). Judge Morley Pavilion. Lawn Seating. Free.
July 18 or 19: 10 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. Experience a special edition of nature hour for both preschool and primary children (ages 3-6) and their family members. Rain or shine, hike along the creek and look for fossils. Call (330) 740-7107 for registration information. Meet at Suspension Bridge parking lot. No strollers please. Fee: $2.
July 20: 1-5 p.m. 4-H exhibitors will show their llama projects. See and learn about these animals. Barns will be open to see the animals.
July 20: 10 a.m., Par 3 Junior/Parent Golf Tournament. Boys and girls 17 and under, nine holes. Fee: $10 per team. Register in person or call (330) 740-7114 beginning July 5.
July 20: Noon-4 p.m. Bring the family to Fellows Riverside Gardens to share an afternoon of old-fashioned fun. July 22-24: 9-10:30 a.m. Tennis Camp. Beginners 6 and older will learn basic tennis skills. Forehand, backhand, footwork, volley and serve tips will be covered. Call (330) 755-7275 to register by July 11.
July 22-25: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Mill Creek Park Explorers Camp. (Grades 4-5 just completed). A close-up look at insects, reptiles, amphibians, fossils, rocks and trees. Hikes are 2 miles or more each day. Registration and fee due at Ford Nature Center by July 15. Fee: $40 R, $50 NR.
July 23: 7 p.m. 7-UP Summerfest Concert Series with Fins to the Left (Jimmy Buffett tribute). Judge Morley Pavilion. Lawn seating. Free.
July 25: 8:30 p.m. Learn interesting facts and folklore about fireflies. Bring an empty container. Meet at Captain John Struthers Pavilion in Yellow Creek Park, Struthers.
July 25: 6 p.m. Celebrate Ohio's history and reminisce with the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens members at this annual fundraiser. Fee: $60 per person.
July 26: 10 a.m.-noon. Learn the basics of kayaking, then use these new skills to explore the Newport Wetlands. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch. Minors 11-17 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Call (330) 740-7107 for registration information. July 27: 1-5 p.m. Wheat will be used to make a craft. Wagon rides will be given every half hour between 1:30-4:30 p.m. MetroParks Farm barns will be open to see the animals.
July 27: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Test your golf skill at the closest-to-the-pin tournament, where $5 gets you a round of golf and an opportunity to win a prize. Also, shape a one-ton pile of sand into a work of art between 1-4 p.m. at the Wick Recreation Area. Reserve a $5 sand "canvas" by calling (330) 740-7107. Staff from the Town Crier newspapers will judge the sculptures and award prizes. There will be hands-on activities for the kids from 1-4 p.m.
July 27: 9:30 a.m. Morning hike through the Mill Creek Gorge. Meet at Lanterman's Mill. About two miles, medium difficulty with steps and hills.
July 27: 5:30 p.m. 7-UP Summerfest Concert Series with 7 Mile Isle (steel drum band) and 7 p.m. The Original Fantasays ('50s-'70s rock). Judge Morley Pavilion. Lawn seating. Free.
July 28-30: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Join the "agventure" camp and explore the MetroParks Farm through hands-on activities, crafts, songs, games and movies. For children in grades one through three. Lunch is provided. Call (330) 533-7572 to register by July 21. Fee: $20.
July 28, 29, 30, 31: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Harry Potter fans 6-12 can attend this special summer session at the famous school of witchcraft and wizardry. Conjure magical crafts, brew potions, learn to speak parsel tongue, and explore the forbidden forest. Older students may attend as Prefects. Don't forget to dress in costume and bring a lunch. July 31: 10 a.m.-noon. Learn about unusual varieties of basil growing in the herb garden, then return to the Davis Center for demonstrations using delicious pesto recipes. Participants will take home plants, recipes, and samples. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $15 R, $20 NR.
