Area athletesearn scholarships
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio High School Athletic Association awarded scholarships to some of the state's top senior athletes at its Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Banquet Friday.
Six local athletes were among the 40 receiving scholarships. They included Allison Brager of Boardman, Ashley Miller of Kinsman Badger, Anna Marie Ricciardi of Western Reserve, Jennifer Sopkovich of Girard and Marlena Wolfe of Champion.
In order to be eligible for an OHSAA scholarship, students must have had a 3.5 grade point average at the end of their seventh semester, plus earned three varsity letters in one sport or four letters in two sports or more.
Track stars honored
AUSTINTOWN -- The Greater Youngstown Track Officials Associated honored Ricciardi and Chaney senior Cameron Widget as its Mahoning County track and field athletes of the year at this week's banquet at The Gatsby.
Ricciardi won her second-straight Division III state high jump title at this month's state meet in Dayton. Widget won the state long jump title in Division I.
The organization also honored Beaver Local senior Scott Weiser and East Liverpool senior Tynetta Anderson as the Columbiana County athletes of the year. Weiser earned All-Ohio honors in the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Anderson was All-Ohio in the 100.
Thiel's Davis earnspreseason honors
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College junior defensive back Kennard Davis of Farrell has been named a preseason All-America first team selection in Street & amp; Smith's 2003 college football preview.
Following the 2002 season, Davis was named as an All-America honorable mention by D3Football.com, along with being selected to the Football Gazette All-South Region third team and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southwest Region first team.
Fitch's Diyorio chosenfor AMC softball team
CANTON -- Andrea Diyorio, a sophomore shortstop for Malone College from Fitch High, was named to the All-American Mideast Conference team as an honorable mention.
Diyorio, a two-year starter at shortstop, led Malone in RBIs (19) and doubles (9). She was selected to the Dean's List for students with a 3.5 grade-point average or better.
The daughter of Sheryl and Jim Diyorio, Andrea compiled a .235 batting average (28-for-119) this season. She also scored 10 scored, 40 total bases and one homer, as the Pioneers posted a 15-32 record.
Davidson, Blandqualify for tourney
YOUNGSTOWN -- Courtney Davidson, a senior at Ursuline High School and Amber Bland, a senior at Boardman High School, have qualified for the Under-16 national AAU basketball tournament in Cocoa Beach Fl. on July 7-13.
Their AAU team, the Queen City Jaguars, beat the Dayton Lady Hoopsters at Avon Lake High School to become back-to-back state champions. The Jaguars finished seventh in the nation last year.
Smith, Kostmandrop in standings
RENO, Nev. -- Dawn Smith of Youngstown and Doris Kostman of Illinois dropped to second place in the 2003 Women's International Bowling Congress Tournament standings.
As of June 15, Smith-Kostman's score of 1,076 became second-highest when the latest results were reported. Taking over their top spot in division III doubles (261-298 average category) was the team of Charissa Dillard (Bartlett, Ill.) and Donna Gaston (Park Forest, Ill.) with 1,078.

Mountaineer to holdQuintana-Barret bout
CHESTER, W.Va -- Carlos "Indio" Quintana (13-0, 11 KO) of Moca, Puerto Rico, will face Vinroy Barret (19-1, 10 KO) of Nashville, Tenn. in a junior middleweight bout July 3 at Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort.
The event, sponsored by Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing, will be broadcast on SHOBOX and will begin at 8 p.m. Ringside tickets are $50, reserved are $25 and general admission are $10. Tickets can be purchased at any Ticketmaster location.
Teams compete
BROOKFIELD, Pa. -- Three teams from Outback Gear.Com/Adventure competed in the grueling 120-mile adventure race called the "Two Day Tango."
The race consisted of a 21-mile mountain run, 4.7-mile river swim, 38-mile mountain bike, 28-mile kayak paddling, 13-mile orientation and a 9-mile run back to the finish line.
Team members include Greg Mennetti, Chuck Gantz, Tori Erwin, Judah Nativio, Dennis Gartland and Dan Bowersox.
