BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY
Graduating senior Jeanine Rees of Poland won a graduate fellowship for public-history and museum-studies work at Northeastern University in Boston. She also was named outstanding senior history major and BGSU history society president, was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma academic honor societies, and is a member of Golden Key. The 1999 graduate of Poland Seminary High School is the daughter of Bill and Regina Rees.
MOUNT ALOYSIUS COLLEGE, Cresson, Pa.
Stellanie Pappas of Poland was named to various honor societies: the Beta Nu Chapter of the Pi Theta Epsilon national physical therapy honor society; the Delta Epsilon Sigma national scholastic honor society; and the Alpha Psi Omega National Dramatic Honorary. A 1999 graduate of Poland Seminary High School, she is the daughter of Tom and Anna Pappas.
CLARION UNIVERSITY, CLARION, PA.
Barb Hammond of Farrell, Pa., was named graduate student of the year during the 30th annual Minority Student Recognition Dinner at the university. The graduate student in communication sciences and disorders is a Farrell High School graduate.
The following local students have been recognized as members of the university's speech and debate team:
Senior English major Ann Godfrey, of Fairview, Pa., was part of teams that reached the semifinals in the King's College Tournament, the quarterfinals in the Catholic University Tournament and the octofinals in the American Debate Association National Tournament. Individually, she won a first-place award at the King's College Tournament and a sixth-place award at the American Debate Association Nationals.
She is the daughter of Nancy Godfrey and a Fairview High School graduate.
Lauren Gilliland of Sharon, Pa., also competed at intercollegiate tournaments. The sophomore secondary education/English major is the daughter of Wade and Valerie Gilliland and a Sharon High School graduate.
Anne Floros of New Castle, Pa., won first place in impromptu speaking during a campus competition. The sophomore speech communication major is the daughter of Harry and Barbara Floros and a Neshannock High School graduate.
Sophomore arts and sciences major Liz Barger of New Springfield won second place in debate during a campus competition. She is the daughter of Carol Vinkler and a Springfield Local High School graduate.
Kristina Strojny of Youngstown, a December 2002 communication graduate, won second place in persuasive speaking during a campus competition. The Cardinal Mooney High School graduate is the daughter of Richard Strojny.
Mindi Schneider of Sharon, Pa., won first place in persuasive speaking and second place in drama during a campus competition. The junior elementary education major is the daughter of Daniel and Sheila Schneider and a graduate of Sharon High School.
DENISON UNIVERSITY, GRANVILLE
Sophomore psychology major Benjamin Wagner of Columbiana has been named an Anderson Science Scholarship recipient. The scholarship provides full tuition for the junior and senior years of students pursuing degrees in the sciences with grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher. Wagner is a 2001 graduate of Columbiana High School and the son of Ray and Cathie Wagner.
Junior philosophy major Simon Kasper of Lake Milton has been selected as a Young Scholar at the school. The program permits outstanding students to conduct summer research with a faculty member or faculty supervision. Students must have grade-point averages of 3.3 or higher and create a project and presentation on the research. Kasper, a 2001 graduate of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kasper. His project is "What is Justice? How Should Rational Beings Behave Toward One Another?"
GROVE CITY COLLEGE, Grove City, Pa.
Three local students have won year-end awards at the college.
Senior James Boazzo of Cortland was a finalist in the Senior Man of the Year Contest, voted by students and faculty on the basis of scholarship, leadership and service.
Junior Benjamin Prince of Warren was inducted into the Beta Mu circle of the Omicron Delta Kappa national honor society, based on leadership in academics and various other areas.
Senior Michelle Wiseman of Sharpsville, Pa., received a Music Education Award, sponsored by the college's chapter of the Music Educators National Conference and based on excellence in music education.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY
Graduating senior Leon E. Evans III of McDonald, who earned a 4.0 grade-point average, has been named a member of various groups recognizing excellence in scholarship service and leadership. They are the Beta Gamma Sigma, Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor fraternities and Golden Key. The 1999 McDonald High School valedictorian is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon E. Evans Jr.
JOHN CARROLL UNIVERSITY,University Heights
Graduating senior Patrick C. Manning of Youngstown was presented the Outstanding English Major Award at the university's recent senior awards ceremony. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Manning.
UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
Two local students received awards from the College of Engineering. Earning a Coleman J. Major Award in Chemical Engineering was Merideth Rowland of Canfield. Winning a Duane R. Keller Award in Civil Engineering was Cristina Pastore of Girard.
