Thursday, June 19, 2003

CAMPBELL -- Three area men were to be arraigned in municipal court today after a fight at the Shell gas station on Wilson Avenue that injured a city police officer.
Patrolman David Wilson suffered minor cuts and swelling after intervening in the fracas Sunday involving Jermaine Adams, 30, of Lourdes Lane; William Smith, 27, of East Philadelphia Avenue, Youngstown; and Smith's brother, Matthew Smith, 25, of Sanderson Avenue, Campbell.
A police report shows the fight began as an argument among the three men at the gas station, which Wilson noticed while on routine patrol around 6 p.m.
Wilson said he grabbed William Smith to separate him from Adams, who then charged Wilson and Smith, causing all three to fall to the ground. Adams then punched Wilson in the back of the head and Smith in the face, the report states.
Matthew Smith then grabbed Adams off of the officer and his brother and began to fight until Adams broke away and returned to striking both Wilson and William Smith, reports state.
Officers from Struthers, Coitsville and Lowellville arrived and assisted Wilson in arresting the three.
Adams was being held without bond on charges of assault, disorderly conduct and assault to a police officer.
The Smith brothers were jailed in lieu of $3,250 bond each on charges of assault and disorderly conduct.
