Andrew Jackson defeat the British in the Battle of New Orleans -- the closing engagement of the War of 1812. In 1918, President Wilson outlines his 14 points for peace after World War I. In 1959, Charles De Gaulle is inaugurated as president of France's Fifth Republic. In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson declares a "War on Poverty." In 1973, secret peace talks between the United States and North Vietnam resume near Paris. In 1976, Chinese premier Chou En-lai dies in Beijing at age 78. In 1982, American Telephone and Telegraph settles the Justice Department's antitrust lawsuit against it by agreeing to divest itself of the 22 Bell System companies. In 1987, for the first time, the Dow Jones industrial average closes above 2,000, ending the day at 2002.25.
January 8, 1978: Ohio Chief Justice C. William O'Neill chooses not to reprimand two former Trumbull County judges for their failure to list a backlog of 250 cases in their annual reports to the Supreme Court.
The Rev. Nicholas Arioli, who has served Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles for 25 years, is leaving for an assignment in Rome. He has been elected to a six-year term on the council of his religious order, the Society of the Precious Blood.
City Council uses its financial muscle in a renewed effort to force Mayor J. Phillip Richley to yield to its demands for changes to some of his appointments. Most councilmen want to retain John Benninger as finance director, a cabinet job that has to be confirmed by council and some are aligned against William Shranko, Richley's executive assistant.
January 8, 1963: Wallace A. Lynn, 85, mayor of Warren from 1930-33 and a respected community leader, dies in Trumbull Memorial Hospital after an illness of two months.
Two Republicans take seats formerly held by Democrats from the Mahoning-Trumbull areas as the 105th Ohio General Assembly is organized. State Sen. James H. Grose fills former state Sen. Stephen R. Olenick's unexpired term and Mrs. Margaret Dennison replaces former Rep. William Carney of Trumbull County.
The Ford Motor Co. begins a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Henry Ford by designating a car as the 60 millionth built by the company. The model was a gold painted Mercury two-door hardtop that will be exhibited at auto shows around the country.
January 8, 1953: Mahoning County commissioners and common pleas judges will meet to discuss one of the county's most pressing problems -- repair or replacement of the dilapidated county jail.
A total of 700 warrants are issued for the arrest of motorists who hold delinquent parking tickets issued in 1952. Many of the motorists have two and three tickets and more than 600 of them are from out of state.
Mrs. Amanda Bentley Butler, 103, one of the district's oldest residents, dies in Church Hill rest home. The former teacher and missionary was the oldest living graduate of Hillsdale, Mich., College and the oldest living former student of Hiram College.
January 8, 1928: The excellent financial administration of Youngstown's city school and park board is expressed in the cold statistics of the Bureau of Census, which show that among Ohio cities only Springfield is run at a lower cost to taxpayers.
Students at Manitoba University in Winnipeg, Canada, who attempt to witness the hanging of Earle Nelson, the "dark strangler," from the upper windows and roofs of university buildings will be expelled. University officials issued the warning after learning that a number of students planned to watch the hanging from university buildings that overlook the jailyard where the gallows are being erected.
Youngstown College scores a decisive victory over the Westinghouse team from Sharon in a sensational cage tilt in Sharon. The score: 37-26.
