COLUMBIANA CORNER Republican backs Democrat for interim recorder position

Monday, January 6, 2003

New Columbiana County Commissioner Gary Williams contended recently that his nonpartisan credentials were established by his recommendation for an interim county recorder.
Williams held that post until the end of the year, when he resigned to become commissioner.
That necessitated naming an interim recorder to fill in until someone can be appointed to complete the nearly two years left on his term.
Williams, a Republican, noted that he recommended Diana Reiter, a Democrat, for the interim post because he believes she's the best person.
Reiter has been a deputy recorder for more than a decade.
Williams' long-term replacement will be appointed by the county Republican Party, however, and there's no doubt that that person will be a GOP member.
'S' is for sentimental
Susan Frenger, administrative secretary in the Leetonia Schools Board of Education office, has a metal "S" mounted on a plaque displayed prominently in the reception area of the district's new kindergarten-through-12th-grade building.
Frenger said many office visitors have asked about the "S" and what it stands for, with "Susan," "school" and "secretary" among the offerings.
The letter is the "S" from the district's former Orchard Hill School sign and has sentimental value for Frenger. She worked in the building for many years, and it was demolished last year to make way for the new school.
