BOYS BASKETBALL Fitch pulls away from Ursuline for SVC victory

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Fitch High boys basketball team limited Ursuline to two points on free throws in the second quarter and the Falcons went on to upend Ursuline 53-32 Friday in a Steel Valley Conference game.
The Irish (4-6, 0-1) had seven turnovers and managed to get off only five shots in the second period as they fell behind 27-10 at halftime.
Mark Aikens and Greg Mayes each scored 18 points for the Falcons (7-1, 1-0). Mayes pulled down six of his team's 22 rebounds.
Isaiah Poindexter, who made the two free throws for Ursuline in the second quarter, paced the Irish with 10 points. Brandon Braxton grabbed seven of 22 rebounds.
Chaney 65, Wilson 54
YOUNGSTOWN -- Chaney senior Chris Childers scored 19 points to lead the Cowboys (3-5, 1-1 City Series).
The Redmen (1-6, 0-1) jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but the Cowboys rallied for a 12-12 tie at the end of the first quarter.
From there, Chaney outscored Wilson 39-23 in the next two quarters to take control of the game.
Childers scored 17 points in the first half. He also had a team-leading 11 rebounds with five assists and three steals.
Dominique Crosby scored 10 points as Chaney built a 17-point lead.
Wilson senior forward Randall Poindexter scored 25 points.
Poindexter was 13 of 16 from the foul line as Isaiah Anderson contributed 11 points and David Johnson had nine rebounds.
Wilson had 29 turnovers to Chaney's 16.
"We were a little rusty, but a major factor was that we had too many turnovers and missed shots," Wilson coach Mark Cherol said. "Chaney came to play and just outhustled us."
Howland 65, Niles 63
HOWLAND -- Scott Day grabbed a rebound and made a shot at the buzzer for the Tigers (3-4, 1-0 Metro Athletic Conference).
The Red Dragons (3-5, 0-1), down 58-52, rallied to tie the score.
Justin Buyler spared the Tigers with 27 points. Brandon Kubicina chipped in with 14.
The Tigers outrebounded the Red Dragons 37-29. Jeff Proctor and Day each had eight rebounds.
Tim Rupert sparked the Red Dragons with 24 points. Dan Jones and Vince Gatta added 19 and 16, respectively.
Liberty 80, Badger 33
LIBERTY -- The Leopards (5-2, 3-2 Trumbull Athletic Conference) held a commanding 44-14 lead at halftime.
Joel Marshall sparked Liberty with 17 points. Bradley Fletcher chipped in with 13 and Aaron Logan finished with 11.
Tyler Bonar led Badger (1-7, 0-4) with 12 points.
United 58, Columbiana 49
HANOVERTON -- Mitch Phillis, who connected on three 3-pointers, and Grant Cope scored 13 points each for the Golden Eagles (5-2, 2-1 Tri-County League).
Cope grabbed eight rebounds.
Nate Shaw and Austen Couchenour sparked the Clippers (6-3, 0-3) with 16 points apiece.
Leetonia 43, Southern 37
SALINEVILLE -- Ryan Dowling had 16 points and seven rebounds and Fred Gray added seven points and seven rebounds Thursday for visiting Leetonia (3-5, 1-2 TCL).
Brandon Hamilton scored 11 points and Josh Diaz added 10 for Southern (3-5, 0-3).
