Kentucky man arraigned
STRUTHERS -- George S. Poole, 32, of Kentucky was arraigned in municipal court Monday on charges of menacing and receiving stolen property. Poole was arrested Jan. 31 after he was accused of threatening to kill a woman who asked him to move a car that was blocking her car. His car, police discovered, had been reported stolen in Kentucky. He is being held at the Mahoning County jail.
Temporary closing
STRUTHERS -- Elm Street will be closed between Garfield and Fourth Street for three weeks beginning today for replacement of a small bridge culvert and a waterline. Northbound traffic will be detoured via Garfield and Sexton; southbound traffic will be detoured to Fifth Street to Sexton, Sexton to Garfield, Garfield to Elm.
Charged in death
YOUNGSTOWN -- A charge of aggravated vehicular homicide against Shawn D. Mulhall has been bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury from municipal court. Municipal Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly set his DUI charge for a pretrial hearing March 27. Mulhall, 28, of Timberbrook Drive, Canfield, is accused of running a stop sign at state Route 616 and McGuffey Road on Dec. 23 and crashing his pickup truck into the side of a car, killing the front-seat passenger.
Competency evaluation
YOUNGSTOWN -- Municipal Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly ordered a competency evaluation for Stephanie M. Gardner, who police said tried to attack Bishop Norman Wagner at Mount Calvary Church on Feb. 2. Gardner, 35, of Kansas City, Mo., was in court Monday for a preliminary hearing on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon and a pretrial hearing on a charge of disorderly conduct. Police said she became enraged when told she would have to make an appointment to see the bishop. A loaded handgun and a full magazine were found in her pockets, reports show.
Stevens pleads innocent
YOUNGSTOWN -- George J. Stevens pleaded innocent at arraignment Monday to a charge of loitering to engage in solicitation. Municipal Judge Robert A. Douglas Jr. set bond for the 57-year-old Canfield man at $1,500, allowing 10 percent to be paid. Stevens, former director of education and now consultant at Choffin Career and Technical Center, was arrested at his home Sunday after failing to appear Friday for arraignment. His lawyer, John F. Shultz, told the judge that his client was hospitalized at the time. Vice cops issued Stevens a citation Thursday after a woman convicted multiple times of loitering to engage in solicitation got into his car.
Warrant issued
STRUTHERS -- Judge James R. Lanzo issued a warrant for Jason R. Prater, 28, of Maplewood Avenue after he failed to appear in court Monday. Police charged Prater with driving under the influence, falsification, resisting arrest, criminal trespassing and criminal mischief. They said he erroneously identified himself during a traffic stop early Friday and then led police on a foot chase.
2 teen boys arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two North Side boys, 15 and 16, were arrested Monday after police saw a stolen car on Gypsy Lane and pursued it southbound on Coronado Avenue, where the boys ran. The 15-year-old passenger, of Covington Street, was caught behind a garage on Goleta Avenue. He faces charges of receiving stolen property and possession of criminal tools. He identified the driver, and police arrested the 16-year-old Saranac Avenue boy at Choffin Career and Technical Center. The driver faces charges of receiving stolen property and having no driver's license.
Drug charges
AUSTINTOWN -- Two 17-year-old boys are facing drug charges. One teen, of Mahoning Avenue, is charged with 14 counts of misdemeanor possession of dangerous drugs, two counts of felony drug abuse and one count of misdemeanor drug abuse. The other, of Fountain Square Drive, is charged with six counts of misdemeanor possession of dangerous drugs and two counts of felony drug abuse. Police were alerted Monday about suspicious behavior of two boys on Avalon Court. They told police they'd skipped school. Police said they found an unlabeled prescription bottle that contained drugs on each boy.
