Panel to recommend replacement for council

SHARON, Pa. -- The Sharon Democratic Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 to recommend someone to fill the council vacancy caused by the death of Lou Rotunno.
One candidate has already expressed interest in the appointment.
Outgoing Councilman Raymond Fabian, a Democrat and 24-year council veteran who chose not to seek re-election this year, said Tuesday that he will apply for Rotunno's seat.
Rotunno, also a Democrat, won re-election to a four-year term in the Nov. 4 general election but died 10 days later.
Council President Fred Hoffman announced Dec. 18 that council must make a two-year appointment to fill the slot, which officially becomes vacant Monday.
The appointment can be only until the next municipal election, which makes it a two-year post.
Hoffman said anyone interested in the appointment should send a letter to the city clerk before 5 p.m. Jan. 13. Council expects to make an appointment at its Jan. 22 meeting.
Councilwoman Chris Outrakis, chairman of the Sharon Democratic Committee, said Tuesday the committee will meet Jan. 12 in city council chambers to hear from any Democrat who wants the job.
The committee can only make a recommendation. City council has the final decision, she said.
Fabian, who served three terms as council president and claims a 99 percent attendance rate, sent his letter saying he wants the appointment to the city clerk this week.
