COLUMBUS -- No longer will the Ohio State basketball team be able to flex its muscles against smaller, undersized opponents.
Texas Tech and then the Big Ten await.
But for one last time Tuesday night, the Buckeyes took advantage of a height and weight differential to roll over Maryland-Baltimore County 60-44.
"The guards were looking for us," said 7-foot center Velimir Radinovic, who led the Buckeyes with 19 points. "We missed some easy shots, but we still tried to force the ball down low."
Radinovic hit seven of 12 shots from the field -- none more than 5 feet from the hoop -- and five of nine free throws to finish within a point of matching his career high. He also had two assists and six rebounds.
Tony Stockman added 12 points for the Buckeyes (8-4).
Penetration
"We always want to start going inside first," Stockman said. "They [UMBC defenders] weren't doubling or helping so our big guys were one on one."
Ohio State has one more non-conference game left -- Sunday afternoon against Texas Tech and coach Bob Knight, a former Buckeyes player -- before beginning the Big Ten season Jan. 7 at Illinois.
Coach Jim O'Brien said the Buckeyes are not where he would like them to be.
"I wish we were further ahead, to be honest with you," he said. "We show signs of playing better, but there are way too many times when you wonder if our progress is where it should be."
Cory McJimson came off the bench to score 10 points for UMBC. John Zito also had 10 for the Retrievers (3-6), who lost their third in a row and fifth in six games.
Ahead 31-24 early in the second half, the Buckeyes went on an 8-0 run with Stockman hitting two baskets. Later they were on top 41-28 and scored 10 of the next 12 points to expand the lead to 51-30.
Ohio State women
LOS ANGELES -- Lisa Willis scored 17 points and Nikki Blue had 15 points and nine assists in UCLA's 71-56 upset Tuesday night of No. 18 Ohio State.
The Bruins snapped a four-game Buckeyes winning streak and beat a ranked opponent for the first time in four tries this season.
UCLA (5-5) led by five points at the break and pulled away in the second half, making 16 of 29 shots for 55 percent. The Bruins shot 52 percent in the game to Ohio State's 50 percent and out-rebounded the Buckeyes 28-24. Willis and Whitney Jones led UCLA with six rebounds apiece.
Caity Matter led Ohio State (8-2) with 21 points. Brandie Hoffman added 10.
Noelle Quinn added 14 points for UCLA.
