YOUNGSTOWN -- Richard A. Walsh, 18, of South Lakeview Avenue was arrested Monday night and charged with the aggravated robbery of a pizza deliveryman. The victim, who works for Briar Hill Pizza on South Meridian Road, told police that he was robbed at gunpoint of $20 and a pizza when he arrived at a house in the 600 block of Steel Street around 8:50 p.m. The deliveryman gave police a description of two suspects.
Using the pizza shop's caller ID, police traced the number to Walsh's neighbor's house on Lakeview. A woman at the house acknowledged that her phone had been used by Walsh between 8 and 8:30 p.m. Police said Walsh, whose clothing matched the description of one robber, was arrested when he came in the front door at his neighbor's house. Police then searched Walsh's house and seized a BB gun. The second suspect remained at large.
2 men on ATVs arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested two men who were accused of illegally riding all-terrain vehicles through neighborhood yards and on city streets at 6 p.m. Monday on the city's East Side.
Police were sent to the area of Shehy and Pearl streets to check out complaints of two men riding four-wheelers through yards. The officers said they saw two men riding the ATVs on the road. Calvin Kelly, 32, of Chatham Lane was arrested on charges of driving with an expired license and operating an ATV on city streets. Terrance Rushton, 21, of Ayers Street was charged with driving under suspension and operating an ATV on city streets. Kelly and Rushton told police they didn't know who owned the vehicles, reports show.
Council plans meeting
CRAIG BEACH -- Village council will meet in special session at 7:30 tonight at the Craig Beach Municipal Building council chamber meeting room. Topics will be appropriations, ordinance for transfer of funds for Medicare and taxes and discussion of an employee's vacation request.
Girl faces burglary charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested a 14-year-old girl found inside Nativity of Christ Orthodox Church on Miller Street on the city's South Side around 4:30 p.m. Monday on a burglary charge. She was taken to the juvenile justice center. A basement window was broken to gain entry.
The girl poured cleaning products on the floor and attempted to drink bottles of church wine, police said. The girl is a habitual runaway from Lincoln Place on East Indianola Avenue, police said. The facility houses wayward youths placed there by Children Services agencies from outside Mahoning County.
Charged with assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- An argument over a chicken order at Park 'N' Shop on Glenwood Avenue at 5 p.m. Monday resulted in the arrest of Matthew C. Jones, 25, of Falls Avenue.
Witnesses told police that Jones went behind the counter after the argument, struck a clerk and then "went crazy," knocking over displays of candy, pantyhose and toys. Jones also knocked down and landed on top of an 88-year-old man, police said. Police charged Jones with vandalism and assault.
A fireworks tribute
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Fireworks unique to Zambelli Internationale will be set off here to the favorite music of company president George Zambelli Sr. on New Year's Eve. Zambelli, 79, died Christmas Day. The fireworks will begin at 6 p.m. and can be viewed from the parking lot next to the Columbus Innerbelt.
Thousands lose power
WARREN -- Wind gusts downed power lines in Brookfield and Newton Falls on Monday, leaving 27,400 customers in Trumbull and Mahoning counties briefly without electricity.
Paul Harkey, a spokesman for Ohio Edison, said that wind appears to have blown a Brookfield power line down at 7:13 p.m., resulting in outages to 15,400 customers in Brookfield, Howland and Warren. Power was restored about an hour later, he said. The second line, in Newton Falls, went down at 7:49 p.m., affecting 12,000 customers in Newton Falls, Lake Milton and Berlin Center. It was repaired by 9 a.m.
Robbed at gunpoint
LIBERTY -- A gunman stole $60 from a 39-year-old Liberty man during an armed robbery that started in a fast-food drive-through.
The victim told police he was in the drive-through of Wendy's on Belmont Avenue about 11:45 p.m. Monday when a man got into his vehicle and ordered him to drive.
The thief pulled a handgun and demanded the driver hand over his money. The robber then fled the car in the area of Youngstown State University.
