Slaying sentence appeal
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christopher Anderson, 36, of South Main Street, Austintown, is appealing his conviction and prison sentence in the strangulation death of 22-year-old Amber Zurcher. Anderson was sentenced earlier this month to 15 years to life in prison after a jury in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court found him guilty of murder. Zurcher was found dead in her Compass West apartment in June 2002.
Incompetent for trial
YOUNGSTOWN -- An East Florida Avenue man has been deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on a charge of rape. Daniel Robinson, 28, now must undergo court-ordered psychiatric treatment and counseling at Northcoast Behavioral Health Care Systems, Cleveland. He will be evaluated again in one year to determine whether he has been restored to competency. Defense attorney Thomas Zena filed a request in October for Robinson to be evaluated to determine his competency to understand the charges against him and assist in his defense. He is accused of raping a 7-year-old girl sometime between October 2001 and January 2002. He could face life in prison, if convicted.
