Nine of 13 winners are from the Mahoning Valley.
RAVENNA -- Highway work zone safety posters from nine seventh-graders attending Diocesan schools in the Mahoning Valley are featured in the Ohio Department of Transportation District Four calendar for 2004.
Brad Mast, a seventh-grader at James A. Garfield Middle School in Portage County, is the grand prize winner in the 2004 calendar poster contest. His poster is featured on the calendar's cover.
The 12 other winners include five from St. Christine School in Youngstown, two from St. Charles School in Boardman, and one each from St. Rose School in Girard and Holy Family School in Poland, whose posters are featured with various months in the calendar.
As part of its Work Zone Safety Initiative, ODOT received more than 300 entries from seventh-graders in the six-county district before its employees selected the 13 for the calendar. Pupils were asked to create posters depicting the dangers lurking in work zones and the importance of safe driving to keep workers and motorists safe.
