CANTON Mourners grieve for two victims of fire

CANTON (AP) -- A woman and her 7-week-old daughter who were among seven killed in a house fire lay together in a coffin at their funeral Sunday.
Nicole and Katlin Cavanaugh died in the fire early Tuesday, possibly set off by a Christmas tree touching a candle.
The Rev. Paul Rudy, chaplain of Aultman Hospital, said during the service at Reed Funeral Home that he received e-mails from around the world inquiring about the deaths.
"In ways I can't explain, Nicole and Katlin touched a lot of lives across our city and across our world," he said.
Six of the dead perished as a raging fire tore through the 2-story frame house. Nicole Cavanaugh, 21, died Tuesday night at an Akron hospital.
The Canton Fire Department has said there were no smoke alarms, and at least one of the adults who was supposed to watch the four children may have been drinking. The fire may have been burning for a half-hour before firefighters were called.
Private burials
Mourners were invited Sunday to share memories of Cavanaugh and her baby.
A man who identified himself as Nicole Cavanaugh's former employer said her life had been difficult, but that the last seven weeks of it were happy.
Another young man identifying himself simply as "Joe," said Nicole Cavanaugh was probably the best friend he had. He said he had spent much of the last 18 months on the phone with her or in her presence.
Their private burial is today, said Fran Facchine, a Reed Funeral Home director.
Also being buried today are fire victims Dale Gross, 34, and his daughters Leigha, 10, and Cally, 4. Their service is at the Gotschall-Hutchinson Funeral Home in Minerva. The funeral and burial of Donald Knight, 43, and his 9-year-old nephew, Jerry Knight, are today at Reed Funeral Home.
