Ice fishing is popular, but be careful

The corps says don't try to walk on a lake with decaying ice.
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Ice fishing at Shenango Lake has become a popular winter activity, but there are some precautions that should be taken.
Shenango Lake was created primarily for flood control and its water levels often fluctuate, leaving thin ice. Anglers are reminded that water does not freeze uniformly.
The U.S. Corps of Army Engineers has provided these tips to help prevent problems:
UFour inches of clean, solid ice are the minimum amount for a lone fisherman and seven inches are needed for group activities. Do not attempt to walk on a lake with milky colored, decaying ice.
UWeak ice always exists around exposed stumps, logs, rocks and other objects.
UPersonal protection clothing and equipment are essential. The items include a personal floatation device and layers of clothing such as wool, polypropylene and high-tech garments.
UIce awls or miniature ice picks, ice staffs and rope should also be taken.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Shenango Lake has installed ice ladders at the Route 846 access area, Hartford Road, Golden Run Wildlife area, Parker's Landing access and the Pa. Game Commission Propagation area. The ladders are to be used as a rescue device for victims who have fallen through the ice.
