Healthy Heart Award
Mary Ann Szelest, Community Health Education Department of Humility of Mary Health Partners, has received the American Heart Association's Daniel H. Becker Healthy Heart Award.
She was given the award for her efforts to implement Project Fit American at Immaculate Conception School in Youngstown and St. Mary and Joseph School in Newton Falls. PFA is a national program that administers academic programs to schools in grades 1 through 12 to develop cardiovascular health and fitness education.
Shirley Lisk, health educator for Forum Health, accepted the corporate award for the Trumbull Memorial Hospital Community Health Connection's blood-pressure screening program that is free to the community.
The site provides about 17,000 blood-pressure tests annually, as well as educational information at its Eastwood Mall location in Niles.
LAWYERS
2 pass Ohio Bar exam
Kristi J. Kmetz, a daughter of Kenneth and Rose Kmetz, of Lowellville, has passed the Ohio Bar exam.
Kmetz, a 1995 graduate of Lowellville High School, earned her bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University in 1999. She received her law degree from Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law.
Robert F. Rivera, son of Elaine Rivera and the late Edwin Rivera of Niles, has passed the Ohio Bar exam.
Rivera is a 1989 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, and received his bachelor's degree cum laude from Youngstown State University in 1994, and earned his juris doctorate from Ohio State University earlier this year. While at OSU, he was a member of the Pro Bono Research Group and received their Foundling Member Ideals Award and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Before attending law school, Rivera was a teacher at Solon High School. He is employed by the law firm of Jones Day in Cleveland.
SCOUTS
Receives Eagle Award
Jonathan Joyce, 18, of Boardman, son of William and Sandra Joyce, received his Eagle Award at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Boardman. Jonathan is a member of Troop 60 at the church and his scoutmaster is Dr. Gregory Roush. He has earned 30 merit badges, and has held offices of assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, chaplain's aide, troop guide and is an Order of the Arrow troop representative.
His Eagle Project was to design and supervise the building of a one-third-mile nature trail that is used as a Land Laboratory by preschoolers in Serendipity Preschool at Westminster Presbyterian Church and pupils at Stadium Drive Elementary School.
Jonathan's special awards include the Order of the Arrow (Wapashuwi Lodge), Cheerful Service Award, Arrowman Service Award, Parvuli Dei (Cub Scout Religious Award) and Ad Altari Dei (Boy Scout Religious Award). He was a four-year member of camp staff at Seven Ranges Reservation in Kensington, Ohio. He was Merit Badge Counselor (2000 and 2001), camp counselor (2002) and Camp Director of Ecology (2003).
Jonathan is a 2003 graduate of Boardman High School, and is attending Kent State University majoring in Conservation Science. He is a member of St. Luke Church, Boardman.
