HONORS
Junior Sailor of Quarter
Navy Petty Officer Richard J. Cappellino, stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was named Junior Sailor of the Quarter for the period July 1 through September 2003 while assigned as a mobile environment team technician aboard the USS Lake Erie (CG-70). He also received a Letter of Commendation from the commanding officer of the Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Center/Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
Cappellino, who recently began a six-month deployment on the USS McClusky to Mexico and South America, is a 1999 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School and a son of Rick and Rose Cappellino of Austintown.
DEPLOYED
Several area residents have been deployed overseas with various military units. They include:
Air Force Tech. Sgt. Van T. Michael, Operation Enduring Freedom. Michael is a flight engineer craftsman with the 50th Airlift Squadron, Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark. He is the son of Donna J. Michael of Sharon, Pa., and a 1981 graduate of Hickory High School, Hermitage, Pa.
Army Reserve Maj. Elizabeth A. Kuhl, Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. She is an operations officer with the 362nd Quartermaster Battalion based in Kinston, N.C. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Chamberlain of Youngstown and a 1983 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.
Army Reserve Capt. Dean A. Bundschu of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Bundschu is a headquarters company commander with the 362nd Quartermaster Battalion based in Kinston, N.C. He is the son of David A. and Shirley A. Bundschu of Canfield and a 1991 graduate of Canfield High School and a 1996 graduate of Ohio Northern University, Ada.
ROTC
Four second lieutenants
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) commissioned four second lieutenants in a Dec. 14 ceremony in YSU's Kilcawley Center. They are:
Adam S. Loutzenhiser, son of Leland Loutzenhiser of Berlin Center, Signal Corps. He is slated for active duty and will attend Signal Officer Basic Course at Fort Gordon, Ga. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Technology from YSU.
Keona L. McNair, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Myron McNair of Youngstown, Adjutant General Corps. She will remain in the area assigned to an Army Reserve unit. She is slated to attend the Adjutant Generals Officer Basic Course at Fort Jackson, S.C. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from YSU.
Paul J. Stankich, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Stankich of Boardman, Infantry. He will report for active duty on Jan. 4 at Fort Benning, Ga., to attend the Infantry Officer Basic Course, followed by assignment to the 172nd Infantry Brigade at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from YSU.
Lakeisha D. Teague, daughter of Andrea Teague of Youngstown, Chemical Corps. She is slated for active duty and will attend the Chemical Corps Officer Basic Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Thiel College and attended YSU Army ROTC through a partnership program.
