The man was indicted last month for a bank robbery.
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A man awaiting trial on federal charges in half a dozen bank robberies walked away from a drug rehabilitation center and robbed a bank for the third time, authorities said.
Michael Mikitka, 36, of Irwin, was arrested Tuesday morning as he walked out of a National City Bank in Forest Hills with a bag of money, FBI spokesman Bill Crowley said. Crowley said it was the third time Mikitka had robbed the suburban Pittsburgh bank.
Mikitka, who was free on bond, walked away Monday afternoon from a drug rehabilitation center where he had been sent by a federal judge while awaiting trial, Crowley said.
Federal agents staked out some of the banks he's accused of robbing, thinking he might return. "They felt he would probably go back to his old habits," Crowley said.
Crowley said agents also believe Mikitka robbed another bank Monday.
Mikitka's attorney, federal public defender Thomas Livingston, did not return a phone call to his office Tuesday afternoon.
Mikitka was indicted Nov. 19 after federal authorities said he robbed a bank in North Huntingdon, about 15 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, a day earlier. Authorities said he wrote the note demanding money on one of his personal checks.
Before he was caught, he allegedly robbed five more banks in a week.
Authorities said they linked Mikitka to the robberies through eyewitnesses and by comparing a picture on his driver's license to security camera images.
After his arrest on Tuesday, Mikitka was arraigned on the six previous bank robbery charges, his bond revoked and he was sent to jail.
