NFL sets schedule
NEW YORK -- The NFL set part of its playoff schedule Monday, including a possible prime-time repeat of the January 2002 snowfest in New England.
A second-round AFC game is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. EST. The Patriots (13-2) already have secured a bye and will be at home that weekend.
They could be scheduled for that game, which would inspire reminiscing about the "tuck rule" overtime victory over Oakland in a blizzard that helped propel the Patriots to the Super Bowl title after the 2001 season.
The other AFC second-round game will be at 1 p.m. EST on Sunday, Jan. 11. The NFC games for that weekend will be at 4:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
The NFC championship game will be played at night, beginning at 6:30 p.m. EST. The AFC title game will precede it at 3 p.m. EST.
In the wild-card round, neither gametime for Jan. 3 has been set. However, on Jan. 4, the NFC will have the early game (1 p.m. EST), followed by the AFC game at 4:30 p.m. EST.
Court declines appealof Yankees lawsuit
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The state's highest court ended a case in which a New York Yankees' clubhouse worker accused the team and some of its players of gay bashing, physical abuse and playing cruel practical jokes.
The Court of Appeals declined to hear an appeal sought by Paul Priore, who sued the Yankees in state Supreme Court in the Bronx in 1998 for $50 million.
Priore contended that after he began working for the team as an assistant equipment manager in 1996, several players made anti-gay remarks and played cruel pranks on him because of his sexual orientation. He also claimed he was fired in August 1997 because he was HIV-positive.
Knicks fire Layden
NEW YORK -- Scott Layden was fired as president of the New York Knicks and Isiah Thomas was hired to replace him.
The move comes after New York missed the playoffs the past two seasons with a roster largely assembled by Layden. The Knicks are 10-18 this season, and recent speculation centered on coach Don Chaney possibly losing his job.
Instead, the odd man out is Layden, who replaced Ernie Grunfeld in the summer of 1999 after the Knicks were coming off an appearance in the NBA Finals.
