Social Security increase
YOUNGSTOWN -- Reflecting the low inflation rate, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income checks will increase 2.1 percent as the new year begins. The increase, which will amount to $13 a month for the average retiree, is the program's annual cost-of-living adjustment for more than 50 million beneficiaries nationwide. Locally, there are 21,905 recipients in Columbiana County, 55,275 in Mahoning County and 45,515 in Trumbull County, the Social Security Administration said. Based on the increase in average wages, the maximum annual earnings subject to Social Security tax will rise from $87,000 to $87,900 next year, the SSA said.

Golf club purchases
CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS, Pa. (AP) -- A historic inn and golf course are now under the same management after nearly 30 years of being run separately.
The owners of the Riverside Inn purchased the Riverside Golf Club on Tuesday. Details of the deal were not released.
"We have done very well at the inn, but the inn needs the golf course. There's an awful lot of things we can do with the two together. But more than that, historically this was all one property," said Michael Halliday, who owns the two properties with his wife, Marie.
The 75-room inn was built in 1885. A nine-hole golf course was built in 1915, and another nine holes were added in 1923.
The Riverside Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is known for his Victorian decor and dinner theater. Cambridge Springs is in Crawford County.
