Cops converge on houseafter threats are reportedGREENFORD -- Guns found in a West Middletown Road house early today were taken for safekeeping by the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department.
Canfield police and an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper converged on the scene to assist two deputies who had responded to a call about a man threatening to kill his girlfriend and parents.
The deputies, who were first on the scene and struggled with the man, were treated for minor injuries, according to the sheriff's department. The man was taken to Forum Northside Medical Center for evaluation.
Cops seek suspectin robbing of eatery
BOARDMAN -- Police are searching for a man involved in an armed robbery at the Coney Island Restaurant on Boardman-Poland Road, at 11:34 p.m. Monday.
According to police, a man in his late 20s or early 30s entered the restaurant through an unlocked back door after closing time. Police said the man threatened the manager with a black handgun and demanded money. He left with $2,300.
Fire breaks out
AUSTINTOWN -- Firefighters were called to 498 Westgate Boulevard at 9:30 a.m. today after a blaze started in a second-story bedroom.
A woman and a young boy in the home at the time left when they discovered the fire. No injuries were reported. Fire Chief Andrew Frost said the fire was reported after the boy noticed a trash can on fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Couple reports robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- A couple who left Minerva's Lounge, 51 N. Meridian Road, about 7:45 p.m. Monday were robbed of cash and jewelry after being forced by two men to drive to a lumberyard on Waverly Avenue, police said.
The suspects, both dressed in black, stole the woman's ring and purse containing $400 and also took her companion's gold men's watch and ring. The victims believe the robbers had guns under their sweaters but didn't see them. The robbers fled on foot toward Salt Springs Road, reports show.
Employee sues for damage
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Liberty couple is suing the wife's employer, Best Buy, over damage the husband's car suffered when the Boardman store's parking lot flooded last summer.
Ann Grove of East Liberty Street is seeking unspecified damages in the suit, filed Monday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. The suit says poor engineering and maintenance caused runoff from heavy rains to pool in the store's employee parking lot, where Grove had parked the car of her husband, Jason.
It says the car was damaged to the point of being a total loss. It does not say what make, model or year the car was.
The parking lot of the store on Boardman-Poland Road was among several area parking lots and properties that were flooded during torrential rains in July and August.
Checks, stamp conspiracy
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted four Mahoning County residents on charges that they conspired to buy more than $10,000 worth of postage stamps at Mahoning Valley post offices in March and April 2002 using bad checks to resell them to local residents at less than face value.
Indicted on charges of theft of public money and conspiracy to commit theft of public money were: James K. Thomas, 37, of LeMans Drive; Elena Adams-O'Connell, 49, of Birch Street; and Leonard E. Mayo, 51, and Junell Brown, 55, both of Meridian Road. The checks were written on closed bank accounts or accounts with insufficient funds, the U.S. attorney said.
Man stabbed in head
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 31-year-old South Lakeview Avenue man was stabbed in the head and robbed of his blue jogging jacket as he walked home from a store at 9:30 p.m. Monday, police said.
The victim told police he was attacked near his driveway but didn't see who did it. The man, who was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center, also suffered defensive wounds to his right hand and left shoulder, police said.
Drug charges in city
YOUNGSTOWN -- Carl V. Sanders Jr., 44, of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard was arrested at his apartment Monday afternoon by members of the U.S. Marshal Service task force and charged with possession of crack cocaine. Two bags of suspected crack were found in the toilet and eight loose rocks of crack were found in the kitchen, reports show. Another man at the apartment, Mark K. Harris Jr., 21, of Hayman Street was arrested on a parole violation charge.
