PHILADELPHIA -- Jim Vandermeer had his first two-goal game in the NHL, and Robert Esche made 18 saves in his return from injury to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a victory over the New York Islanders. Philadelphia snapped a season-worst, five-game winless streak (0-1-2-2) and won at home for the first time in four games. The Flyers, the last team to lose a home game, had dropped three straight there -- two in overtime.
Hurricanes 2, Bruins 1
BOSTON -- Radim Vrbata and Eric Staal scored goals and Kevin Weekes made 37 saves to lead Carolina to a victory over Boston, the Hurricanes' second straight win under Peter Laviolette. Carolina beat Pittsburgh 2-1 in overtime Thursday night in Laviolette's debut after Paul Maurice was fired Monday following an 8-12-8-2 start. Staal pushed the Hurricanes' lead to 2-0 3:03 into the third period with his seventh goal of the season, corralling a loose puck in front and beating goalie Andrew Raycroft with a backhand flip.
Senators 3, Rangers 1
OTTAWA -- Curtis Leschyshyn, Peter Schaefer and Jason Spezza scored to lead the Ottawa Senators to a victory over the New York Rangers. Patrick Lalime made 24 saves for Ottawa, which scored three straight goals after falling behind 1-0 for the 19th time in 31 games. The Senators avenged their most lopsided defeat of the season, a 6-2 loss in New York on Nov. 23.
Maple Leafs 4, Canadiens 2
TORONTO -- Mats Sundin scored the go-ahead goal with 29 seconds left and the Toronto Maple Leafs extended their franchise-record point streak to 14 games with a victory over with Montreal Canadiens. Wade Belak scored Toronto's tying goal in the third period, and Bryan McCabe added an empty-netter for the Maple Leafs, 12-0-1-1 during the streak. Toronto hasn't lost in regulation since Nov. 20 at Edmonton.
Stars 2, Lightning 1
TAMPA, Fla. -- Mike Modano scored his first goal in 12 games and Marty Turco made 26 saves to help the Dallas Stars beat the Tampa Bay Lightning. Brenden Morrow also scored for Dallas, 4-12-2 on the road. In 18 road games, the Stars have scored 21 goals. Turco has allowed two goals or fewer in 12 of his last 14 games and posted a mark of 7-6-1.
Predators 1, Red Wings 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Dan Hamhuis scored at 8:33 of the third period and Tomas Vokoun stopped 21 shots as the Nashville Predators snapped a five-game winless skid by beating the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 Saturday night. The Predators are undefeated against Detroit this season, improving to 3-0 over the Western Conference's best team.
Blues 1, Coyotes 1
ST. LOUIS -- Chris Osgood stopped 24 shots for the St. Louis Blues, and Sean Burke of the Phoenix Coyotes made 30 saves in a tie. Shane Doan scored a short-handed goal 5:59 in, and Pavol Demitra tied it with a power-play goal with 6:02 left in the second period. St. Louis is 6-1-3 while Phoenix is 3-1-10. The Blues' lone loss in overtime was to Phoenix.
