Davis-Besse nuke plant won't reopen this year

OAK HARBOR, Ohio (AP) -- Operators of the Davis-Besse nuclear plant won't meet their target of reopening the plant this year.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it does not know when the plant can restart because of continuing concerns about how the plant is being operated.
A two-week inspection revealed numerous operator errors at the plant, which has been closed for nearly two years. None of the problems rose to the level of a safety concern, but regulators were concerned that errors were being repeated.
"What's important to the NRC is why they occurred," said Jack Grobe, head of an NRC panel that is overseeing the repairs at the plant.
FirstEnergy Corp., which owns the plant along Lake Erie, had hoped the inspection would show that the plant was ready to start producing electricity. They had planned to make their final pitch for restart at a meeting next Monday.
