2004 Citizens Police Academy has openings

YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Sheriff Randall A. Wellington has approximately 50 openings for his 2004 Citizens Police Academy.
The academy is funded by money from the Department of Homeland Security to help Wellington train citizens to assist in an emergency.
The availability of a rapid deployment force in the event of a terrorist attack is crucial to law enforcement.
It is necessary to have a well-trained citizen's corps to assist immediately in the event of a crisis, according to the sheriff's office.
Two classes will be offered. The first meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays starting Jan 5. The second meets from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays starting Jan. 10.
Topics include crime-scene investigations, command protocol, radio communications, report writing, vehicle operations and firearms safety. A graduation ceremony will be on March 15.
Interested people can visit the sheriff's office Web site at www.mahoningsheriff.com., where the full academy schedule and a class syllabus are posted.
Applicants are welcome to apply online or to print a copy of the application and mail it to: Sheriff Randall A. Wellington at 110 Fifth Avenue, Youngstown 44503. All Mahoning County residents will be considered.
