Grant may not go through
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A $2.2 million federal grant to remove sewage overflow from a stream that enters the Ohio River could be down the drain, and the $5 million cleanup may be put on hold because of municipal bickering over maintenance costs.
The 3 Rivers Wet Weather Demonstration Program funnels money from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to municipalities to comply with federal clean-water mandates.
The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority has proposed contributing 40 percent of the maintenance costs, and the rest would be split evenly among Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority, Bellevue and Ross.
Bellevue and Pittsburgh officials have agreed on the plan, but Ross officials don't want to pay for maintenance of a sewer line that's primarily in Pittsburgh.
