Lauren Brooks named Miss Cinderella
Proceeds from the event benefit two projects sponsored by the league.
BOARDMAN -- Lauren Brooks was crowned Miss Cinderella during the 48th annual Cinderella Ball sponsored by the Junior Civic League on Nov. 28 at Mr. Anthony's.
The evening's theme was "An Elegant Evening of Enchantment." A buffet dinner was served following the presentation of the debutantes and their escorts, and last year's winner, Amber Williams, now a student at OSU, spoke about her reign.
The winner
Lauren is a daughter of Lawrence and Lynda Brooks and is a senior at Ursuline High School. Her escort was Jamhal Simon, a Wilson High School student.
As Miss Cinderella, Lauren will receive a $1,500 scholarship to Ohio State University, Columbus, where she plans to study pharmacy.
First runner-up was Khristan Manigault, daughter of Ray and Kim Bonner and William Manigault. The Chaney High School student was escorted by Marlon Evans, also a Chaney student.
Second runner-up was Whitney Washington, daughter of Wanda and James Washington. Whitney and her escort, Chanon Lockett, are seniors at Chaney.
Other debutantes presented were Tiffany Gibson, Candis Harper, Johnneeckquia Hopkins, Brittny Humphrey, Tiasia Patterson and Brittany Jackson.
Escorts were Braylon Smith, David Jones, Jeffrey Clark, Mike Hall, William Kennedy and Joe Phinisee. Page was Phillip Morgan.
Ball co-chairwomen were Doris Bullock and Rose Williams. Phyllis Cross is league president.
Purpose
Proceeds from the event are earmarked for the league's scholarship fund and its Adopt a School program. Since its inception in the spring of 1952, the Junior Civic League has awarded more than $380,000 in scholarships to black students from the Youngstown area.
