COLUMBIANA -- With the filing deadline for candidates seeking public office rapidly approaching, only one person has filed for two seats on the Columbiana Schools Board of Education.
The deadline for candidates' filing to appear on the November ballot is 4 p.m. Thursday.
John Payne, director of the Columbiana County Board of Elections, said Robert Casacchia has filed as a candidate.
The terms of board president James Bosela and member Stephen Cramer expire in December.
Bosela has not yet filed.
Cramer, a Presbyterian minister, said he won't seek re-election because he has a full schedule with family life, pastoring several small Presbyterian churches in the area, and participating in civic activities. He said his main ties to the school have been through his son, who will graduate.
"It has been a great honor to serve the people of Columbiana on the school board," Cramer said.
Accomplished goals
He said he ran for the post with a desire to continue the district's academic excellence and to continue to improve the district. He said that during his tenure the school district's proficiency test results continue to be the highest in the county.
He said he is also proud of the board's work in the hiring of Patty Hura as superintendent and in working to persuade voters to pass the income tax.
"When I ran for office I also promised to work to include soccer in the list of extracurricular activities, and I have been delighted to serve as soccer coach for the varsity."
