COLUMBIANA CORNER Beaver Creek State Park honored for volunteers

Wednesday, April 30, 2003

Beaver Creek State Park's success in persuading area residents to volunteer at the park has gained the state's attention.
The park, north of East Liverpool off state Route 7, recently was named Volunteer Park of the Year by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Receiving mention was the park's effort in recent years in creating a nature center staffed by volunteers.
Park officials are continuing to seek help from area residents.
Anyone interested in volunteering there is asked to attend a meeting set for 6 p.m. April 29 at the park office, 12021 Echo Dell Road, Middleton Township.
For more information, contact Jim Tillman, park manager, at (330) 385-3091.
Looking out for teens
Columbiana County Sheriff Dave Smith is hoping the 20-minute blocks of time he is spending with groups of area high-schoolers will help them avoid a tragedy.
With the spring prom and graduation season coming up, Smith has been speaking to high school assemblies, where he urges students not to let the festivities interfere with safe driving and common sense.
Smith noted that Columbiana County has several traffic fatalities each spring that are tied to partying teens.
He said he'd like to see none this year.
