SHARON, Pa. -- The Sharon City School District needs to get state approval before it can move its Alternative Education Program classroom into a commercial building at East State Street and Forker Boulevard.
Sharon bought the vacant brick building in September from National City Bank for $200,000 in a move that expanded its campus complex along East State Street.
The plan is to move the AEP program for pupils with behavioral or other problems into that building and to create some storage space for the district's maintenance department as well.
The AEP program is now held at the F.H. Buhl Club, several blocks away from the high school.
The district, however, must first secure the approval of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & amp; Industry to put students in the building, and must also win the approval of the Pennsylvania Department of Education for the project, which will include construction of a small parking lot.
The school board voted unanimously Monday to seek the state's approval.
Final design and cost estimates aren't finished yet, but the district wants to open bids on the work June 10 and start construction before the end of that month, completing the job before the start of school in September.
Other matters
In other business, the board:
* Voted unanimously to fire John Bohach as a cook/baker. The allegations in the dismissal include "incompetency, intemperance, neglect of duty, violation of any of the school laws of this Commonwealth or other improper conduct." School officials wouldn't discuss any specifics but said Bohach was suspended in March without pay following an investigation by the administration.
Bohach, contacted after the meeting, said he was dismissed for missing work and won't challenge the decision.
* Voted unanimously to expel a junior-senior high school pupil for the remainder of the school year for vandalism. The pupil will be permitted to re-enter school in the fall, provided that he or she complies with certain conditions and attends a meeting with administrators and the pupil's parents or guardians.
