Robert Lichty and Rosemary Rubin of Canton, Ohio, co-chairpersons of the 2003 Lincoln Highway cross-country anniversary tour, have announced the following:
DEADLINE
You must register by July 1, except for people interested in tagging along for one or two days. These people should, however, call the organizers in advance. Participants provide and drive their own vehicles.
Each vehicle must be represented by a Lincoln Highway Association member. Nonmembers can join by including a $30 annual dues payment with the tour application.
COST
Price of the full tour -- plus amenities for the vehicle, driver and one passenger -- is $450. Seven days of participants' choice plus amenities for driver and one passenger: $250; any three days and amenities, for driver and one passenger: $150. Additional passengers pay $195 each for the full trip, $100 for seven days, $60 for three days. Additional days beyond the package, $28.50 per vehicle per day. Amenities included are festivities, sweep vehicles, event shirts, car decals and so on. One-day travelers can join for free, paying for benefits and special souvenirs a la carte.
Participants will pay for their own hotels, often Holiday Inns, arranged by travel agent Chima Travel of Fairlawn, Ohio.
A trucking company will provide return shipping of vehicles for people who want it. There will also be a sweep vehicle and trailer to haul broken-down vehicles to the next town.
After registration Aug. 16, in Secaucus N.J. (where some of the travelers will stay overnight), the Times Square gathering will officially kick off the trip.
Overnights will be in Secaucus; Lancaster and Pittsburgh, Pa.; Mansfield, Ohio; South Bend, Ind.; Sterling/Rock Falls, Ill.; Ames, Iowa; Omaha, Lexington and Sidney, Neb.; Laramie and Rock Springs, Wyo.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Ely and Fallon, Nevada; Auburn and San Francisco, Calif.

A good introduction is Drake Hokanson's book "The Lincoln Highway: Main Street Across America," written in 1988. I found a used copy in good shape on eBay.
