Newton Falls Libraryschedules events
NEWTON FALLS -- The Newton Falls Public Library, 204 S. Canal St., is conducting special classes designed to provide an introduction to the best online resources available to assist students with homework and research projects. Students will be guided through techniques for finding the information they need at the library and at home. Classes are from 4 to 5 p.m., with time allotted for one-on-one assistance. Sessions will be divided for students ages 8-12 and 13-18. For date, registration and other information, call the library at 330-872-1282 or email newtonpl@oplin.lib.oh.us.
The library also is looking for interesting or unusual collections to be displayed in the library's lobby exhibit case. Anyone having a collection to share should contact the library. Arrangements can be made for those wishing to have their collections displayed anonymously.
"Motocycle" authorto appear at Book Nook
NILES -- Bob Woofter of Cortland will be at the Book Nook, 2103 Elm Road N.E., from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday to sign copies of his book, "Motorcycle Camping Made Easy."

Elizabeth Spiresturns grief into poetry
"Now the Green Blade Rises" by Elizabeth Spires (Norton, 80 pp., $21.95).
BALTIMORE -- When Elizabeth Spires' mother died recently, at least the daughter had a way to express grief. About half of Spires' new volume of poetry, "Now the Green Blade Rises," is about her mother. She writes: "Words are so small. Words have no weight./And nothing will ever be the same." As Spires relives scenes and emotions across the years, mourning is as always unable to provide most of the answers; yet hers penetrates the mother-daughter union at its innermost.
Thanks to this and four previous books of poetry, Spires has made herself widely known. Hers is an imagination stirred by many places, many people; a voice that speaks tersely and clearly. At the end, she is addressing her own daughter.
Hispanic Heritage Month celebrated in kids' books
DETROIT -- It's Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 -- the beginning date coinciding with independence day for several Hispanic nations.
A good way to share celebrations of Latin American countries is "Fiestas: A Year of Latin American Songs of Celebration" selected by performer and songwriter Jose-Luis Orozco (Dutton Children's Books, $17.99). "Fiestas" is joyfully illustrated by Elisa Kleven. The collection includes songs and descriptions from familiar holidays arranged to follow the months of the year. It also includes celebrations lesser known to many children, including the International Day of the Child, April 30, and songs sharing milestones such as the quinceanera, the celebration of a girl's 15th birthday.
Popular artist and storyteller Tomie dePaola shares the Cinderella story with a new twist in his new book, "Adelita: A Mexican Cinderella Story" (G.P. Putnam's Sons, $16.99). DePaola's trademark style and color match well with a lively retelling of the fairy tale. The artwork captures the colors and patterns of Mexico.
