LIBERTY -- A father has been charged with injuring his special-needs 6-year-old son.
Jerry E. Malcomson Jr., 28, of Naylor-Lloyd Road, was released Monday on a total $10,000 bond after appearing before Girard Municipal Judge Michael A. Bernard.
He is charged with child endangering and permitting child abuse, both felonies, and domestic violence, a misdemeanor.
Niles police were notified Monday after the boy showed up with injuries at Washington Elementary School.
The boy attends the Niles school because his mother, who has custody of him, lives in Niles.
The boy was visiting his father at the time, police said.
Liberty police Capt. Janet Virostek said the boy had been struck on the back. He was treated at Forum Health Tod Children's Hospital. He did not suffer any broken bones or internal injuries, Virostek said.
During questioning by police, Virostek said, Malcomson admitted striking his son with his hand.
When police told Malcomson they suspected more than a hand was used to inflict the injuries, he asked for an attorney, the captain said.
Virostek said the boy is bipolar and has attention deficit disorder.
He had been taken off his medication, she said, but it isn't known why.
