HERMITAGE, Pa. -- U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-3rd, has been presented with the U.S. Oncology Medal of Honor for his work to help eradicate cancer.
English, noting that both of his parents fought the disease, said he was honored to accept the award.
"Most of our lives have been touched by cancer in some form. Most of us have seen the pain and suffering it causes," he said.
The award was presented Monday at the Oncology-Hematology Associates office on Highland Road Drive by Dr. Michael Voloshin, who works in that office, and Dr. Jeffrey Shogan, deputy director for business affairs of UPMC Cancer Centers.
Dr. Shogan said only a handful of the awards are presented annually and go to people in the forefront of the fight against cancer.
He said English has taken a hands-on approach to help fund cancer research and treatment and patient access to treatment facilities.
U.S. Oncology, headquartered in Houston, provides pharmaceutical services, cancer center services and cancer research services to community-based medical practices.
