Two former Heartland Christian School pupils were winners in the Ohio Department of Public Safety's Emergency Medical Services for Children safety artwork contest.
School administrator Dallas Lehman said the pupils participated in the contest in the 2001-02 school year while fifth-graders in Lisa Mahoney's art classes.
Delaney Giles, 12, formerly of Columbiana, was one of 12 winners from more than 4,500 entries statewide, he said. Delaney will receive a bicycle, a helmet, a plaque and copies of the EMSC 2003 calendar.
Delaney's poster promoting bike safety will be featured in the calendar, pictured on the May calendar pages, he said.
Carissa Cabassa, 12, of Alliance, received an honorable mention award for her poster on bike safety and will receive a bike helmet, he said.
Lehman said Delaney moved to Florida at the end of the school year, and Carissa now attends a Christian school in Stark County.
The girls will receive their prizes during the Ohio Department of Public Safety awards ceremony in Columbus next month, Lehman said.
Everyone's a critic
Columbiana County Commissioner Dave Cranmer filled in for the commissioners clerk during a recent commissioners meeting.
Cranmer verbally stumbled a few times while reading aloud a list of travel requests being submitted for approval.
That prompted Commissioner Jim Hoppel to crack, "The clerk does a better job."
