28th peace race slated Oct. 6 at Mill Creek

Some of the world's greatest runners have participated over the race's 27-year history.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 28th annual Youngstown Peace Race will be contested Oct. 6th in Mill Creek Park.
The 2002 event is being presented by The Butler Wick Corporation and benefits Tod Children's Hospital.
The race has been an attraction to many of the world's top runners over its 27-year history.
Included in the list of Peace Race Champions and participants are: Frank Shorter, Cyndie Brown, Lasse Viren, Anne Audain, Salvador Garcia, Liz McColgan, Bill Rodgers, Danuta Bartoszek, Kieth Brantley, Jackline Torori, Zackariah Barie, Julie Brown, Rob deCastella, Australia, Sissel Grottenberg, Sean Dollman, Lioudmila Alexeeff, Moses Macharia and Elaine vanBlunk.
Shorter 1975 champ
Shorter, the 1975 Peace Race Champion, captured his Peace Race victory in between winning the gold medal in the Munich Olympic Marathon and the silver medal in the Montreal Olympic Marathon. After his Peace Race victory, Shorter claimed that the race course was the most beautiful course of any he had run.
The Peace Race consists of two races -- a 2-mile fun run/walk that starts near the Youngstown YMCA on Commerce Street at 9:30 a.m., and the feature race, a 10-kilometer race that travels through Mill Creek Park and drops 280 feet in elevation from start to finish. The 10k starts at 10:15 a.m.
Day of race registration and packet pick-up will be at the Youngstown YMCA beginning at 7:45 a.m.
Entry forms are available at Second Sole or area YMCAs. The entry fee is $13 before race day and $17 on race day.
