90th anniversary
WARREN -- Marcus Miller, bishop of the Northeast Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will deliver the sermon for the 90th anniversary celebration of Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Sept. 29. The church, established in 1912, with 23 members, has grown to 480 members. An extensive sanctuary renovation has just been completed. The building has been expanded three times and there have been major renovations on other occasions. In 1987, a new pipe organ was installed. The Rev. Larry Mackey is the pastor.
35th anniversary
CANFIELD -- On Sunday, Western Reserve United Methodist Church will celebrate its 35th anniversary. It was created in 1965 when Cornersburg Methodist and the Epworth Methodist churches merged. The Cornersburg Church was founded in 1911. The Epworth Church in Youngstown was founded by Trinity Methodist in 1885.
For the past nine years, The Rev. Russ Adams has served as the pastor of the church. The preacher for the anniversary will be the Rev. Bruce Irwin, who is a retired United Methodist pastor and a former member of the Epworth Church.
Outdoor musical
AUSTINTOWN -- A free outdoor concert will be at 6 p.m. next Saturday in West Austintown First United Methodist Church. Featured will be church members Harold and Cheri Blackann and Friends.
Revival services
COLUMBIANA -- Zion Hill Church of the Brethren will have a revival meeting at 10:35 a.m. Sunday with the theme, "Accept Not Substitute," and at 6 p.m. with the theme "Tree or Scrub Brush."
Other times and talks include: 7 p.m. Monday, "A Work to Be Done"; 7 p.m. Tuesday, "Not Alone"; 7 p.m. Wednesday, "Determined and Confident."
The speaker will be Pastor Chris Baker of Church of the Brethren, Dupont, Ohio. Baker has pastored at Fostoria Church of the Brethren, Mount Pleasant Church of the Brethren in North Canton and has been youth pastor at Dupont for over five years. Call (330) 482-4446.
Training workshop
BOARDMAN -- St. Charles Parish will host a training workshop, led by Sally Mews of the Archdiocese of Chicago, for parishioners interested in the ministry of "welcoming back" inactive Catholics. All parishes in the Youngstown diocese have been invited. Invitations were also extended to the dioceses of Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Steubenville, Erie and Pittsburgh. Evangelist to speak
POLAND -- George Godfrey, evangelist and author of "How to Win Souls and Influence People," will be the guest speaker on Oct. 6 at Gospel Baptist Church. Sunday school will be at 9:30 a.m., the morning service is at 10:30 a.m. and the evening service at 6 p.m. Godfrey's wife, Marilyn, will provide ministry in song during both services, and will present a special piano concert during the Sunday evening service.
Special service
YOUNGSTOWN -- Canaan Missionary Baptist Church will have a 25th pre-pastoral anniversary service at 4 p.m. Sunday. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Derrick Anderson.
Bible walk event
BOARDMAN -- Good Hope Lutheran Church will have a "Walk Through the New Testament" seminar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 12. An instructor from Walk Thru the Bible Ministries will lead the one-day seminar. Lunch will be served and a free-will offering accepted. Phone the church at (330) 782-8109 by Oct. 5 to register.
Installation rite
WARREN -- Elim Christian Center will have an ordination service for Evangelist Brenda Jones at 6 p.m. Sunday. She will be ordained as pastor over the ministers at the church. Evangelist Jones was licensed to the ministry in 1984, ordained in 1986, and resides in Girard.
School program
COLUMBIANA -- Heartland Christian School officials are working to improve communication to area churches by designating some school families as church representatives. Administrator Dallas Lehman said several families will serve as liaisons to their churches, providing the churches with general information about the school and its special events.
