Lying to police getsprobation for area man
AUSTINTOWN -- A Salem man has been sentenced to a year of reporting probation for lying to police about why he was walking naked in Milton Township in November.
Joseph Hampson, 34, of Georgetown Road, also was ordered to pay $150 in fines and court costs Thursday by Judge David D'Apolito in Mahoning County Court in Austintown. D'Apolito also gave Hampson a 180-day suspended jail sentence and ordered him to undergo alcohol counseling.
Hampson had pleaded guilty to falsification. Reports state that Hampson was naked when he flagged down a township police officer at about 2 a.m. Nov. 10 on North Newton Falls Road. When questioned by police, Hampson said he had been gang-raped and robbed by three men in a maroon vehicle.
He later told police he made up the story.
City official to analyzerental lighting service
COLUMBIANA -- City Manager Keith Chamberlin will do a cost analysis of the city's rental lighting service at the request of Councilmen Don Leonard and Don Vignon. Chamberlin said that for several years the city has rented outdoor security lights to its electric customers who request it.
Chamberlin says the rent on the lights ranges from $3.50 to $14 a month, depending on the size of the light, which range from 175 watts to 1,000 watts.

GREENFORD -- Angels for Animals is promoting spaying and neutering with the Columbiana Dog Pound. If you save a dog from the Columbiana Dog Pound, within two weeks of its adoption, take it to Angels for a free spay/neuter and one rabies shot.

Damages awarded
LISBON -- A Boardman man recently was awarded $500,000 in damages by a Columbiana County Common Pleas Court jury.
The jury heard a trial last week based on a July 2001 lawsuit in which Steven Molnar of Orlo Lane sued Starrett Service Inc. of Massillon and one of its truck drivers, also of Massillon.
The lawsuit arose from a September 1999 traffic accident in Columbiana County involving Molnar and a tractor-trailer rig owned by Starrett and driven by D.W. Duncan.
Molnar claimed in the lawsuit that Duncan was negligent in operating the vehicle and that Starrett was negligent in entrusting it to him.
Molnar was represented by D'Apolito & amp; D'Apolito, a Boardman law firm.
Accident kills man
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Matthews Road man was killed when his car crashed into a garbage truck. Denis E. Kosciuszko of R.D. 2, Box 441, New Castle, died at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday on Pa. Route 158, near Pa. Route 18, said state police. Kosciuszko's age was not available.
Police said Kosciuszko was traveling west when his car crashed into the back of a stopped Tri-County Garbage Truck. Police said Kosciuszko was not wearing a seat belt.
State mediator sought
SHARON, Pa. -- Negotiators working on a new teachers contract in the city school district are seeking the help of a state mediator in resolving their remaining differences.
Joyce Grimenstein, a school board member and chief negotiator for the district, said Tuesday that three financial issues remain to be settled but she wouldn't reveal just what those items are. The first meeting with a mediator is set for Oct. 1, she said.
Sharon has 198 teachers who have been working under an extension of their old contract which expired June 30.
