He assumes his new position in November.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Michael T. Rowan is leaving as president and chief executive officer of Humility of Mary Health Partners to take over a 10-hospital system in Detroit.
Rowan has been hired, effective in November, as chief operating officer for St. John Health System, a grouping of 10 hospitals with 20,000 employees.
During his 31/2-year tenure with HMHP, the organization added more than 500 employees, turned a $10 million deficit into an $18 million surplus, won numerous quality and service awards, and embarked on an $80 million series of improvements, a hospital press release said.
"Humility of Mary Health Partners is a strong organization with talented people," Rowan said. "My time here in Youngstown has been rewarding and enjoyable. The area offers its residents the very best. This move is an opportunity for me to move on to a new, greater challenge."
Germaine Bennett, chairwoman of HMHP's board, said, "Michael has served Humility of Mary Health Partners and the people of this Valley very well." She noted, "He has been a major force in our recent success and we will all miss him, knowing though, that his new position offers a wonderful challenge."
Hospital officials said that they've begun the search for a new president.

HMHP, which oversees St. Elizabeth Health Center, St. Joseph Health Center, HM Home Care, HM Home Therapies, HM Home Medical Equipment, The Assumption Village and Humility House, employs more than 5,500 employees and physicians.
Before joining HMHP, Rowan held positions at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla., Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, Ga., and St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.
A Toledo native, Rowan is a graduate of Miami University in Ohio and has a master's degree in health services administration from the University of Michigan.
