Tuesday, September 17, 2002

The suspect is accused of taking beer from the store.
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said they arrested George Crawford Jr., 23, of Quinby Street in the strong-arm robbery of a Dairy Mart store in Brookfield Township early today.
Crawford was arrested at his home shortly after 2 a.m. Police said the clerk who was robbed was brought to Pennsylvania and identified Crawford as the robber.
Accused of beer theft
Details of the robbery were sketchy this morning, but Sharon police said Crawford is accused of taking beer from the store and assaulting a clerk who tried to stop him.
Brookfield's investigation led to Crawford as the suspect, but when police went to his home, his father, George Crawford Sr., 57, who also lives there, denied his son was home.
Police said the younger Crawford walked out of the house a few minutes later carrying a bag containing the same type of beer taken in the Brookfield robbery.
The younger Crawford tried to run from police and then fought with them when he was captured, police said.
He was jailed on Sharon's charges of receiving stolen property, aggravated assault, resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Police said a Greenville resident had reported Crawford had his car without permission.
Also arrested
The elder Crawford was arrested at 2:35 a.m. on a charge of hindering apprehension.
He and his son were held overnight for arraignment today.
