Operation Gunlock set
LORDSTOWN -- The Lordstown Police Department, the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police and the Law Enforcement Foundation will jointly sponsor Operation Gunlock, a safety program.
Operation Gunlock will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday and at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lordstown Apple Cider Festival, and at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at Lordstown High School during the open house.
The program is designed to help adult gun owners develop safe handling and storage procedures for all firearms. Officers will give 45-minute demonstrations on those procedures. There will be two demonstrations at each session.
Participants can receive cable locks for firearms while they last, or they can sign a waiver to receive a free trigger lock.
Cleaning up cemetery
GIRARD -- Fall cleanup at Girard City Cemetery begins Wednesday and runs through Sept. 30. If flowers are not removed from graves by Sept. 30, employees will remove them to prepare for holiday wreaths.
Meeting changed
BROOKFIELD -- The September meeting of the Brookfield Board of Education has been changed to 6 p.m. Sept. 25, at the high school computer room. A work session will be at 5 p.m.
Bridge work being done
LEAVITTSBURG -- Eagle Creek Road bridge over the state Route 5 bypass is reduced to one lane. There are traffic lights placed at each end of the 1,000-foot closure to allow traffic to travel through alternately. The closure will continue for the next two weeks. Both lanes on West Market Street and North Leavitt Road have been opened.
Welsh festival planned
NILES -- The 76th Niles Gymanfa Ganu (Welsh Hymn Festival) starts at 3 p.m. Oct. 6 at the McKinley Memorial Auditorium, Main Street, Niles.
The festival started in 1929 when Welsh and non-Welsh gathered to celebrate Welsh heritage and sings hymns in English and Welsh.
Musical Director for the festival is Geraint Wilkes, known as "The Welsh Tenor," originally of Aberystwyth, Wales, now of Milwaukee. Music will be provided by the Shenango Valley Chorale, Youngstown soprano Megan Morris and Wilkes. Accompanist is Sally Sampson of Deerfield.
After the entertainment, there will be a traditional Welsh Tea.

Honoring coach
CHAMPION -- Roger Samuelson, president of the school board, presented commendations and a plaque to cross country coach Richard Thomas Neighbarger for his 31 years of service.
The board also voted to name the new 3.1-mile cross-country course after him.
Platinum awards were presented to the Champion PTO and the Roden family for support of the Champion High School Band and soccer team.
The board agreed to pay the Trumbull County Educational Service Center an annual fee of $2,000 for each student participating in the Academy for the Arts for the 2002-03 school year. Champion will secure one seat in the arts academy.
The board also accepted a $4,000 grant from Trumbull County Family and Children First Council (Steps to Respect/Character Education) for Central Elementary and Champion Middle School.
Political group to meet
POLAND -- The Democrats of the 17th District, a local political organization, will meet at 7:30 p.m. today at the Poland Community Baseball Association hall on Sheridan Road.
