WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA Laurel posts 21-15 win over Mohawk

Sharon and Hickory shut out their opponents by a combined 59-0 score.
BESSEMER -- Ethan Hill's 50-yard touchdown run with 5:41 to play Friday gave the Laurel High football team a 21-15 victory over Mohawk.
On its final possession, Mohawk was stopped on fourth-and-goal at the 1 yard line.
Jeff Thomas, who rushed for 100 yards on 23 carries, put the Spartans (1-2, 1-0 MAC North) ahead with a 5-yard touchdown run. Thomas caught a conversion pass from Brandon Dando for Laurel's 8-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Warriors (0-3, 0-1) tied the game when Bobby Griffith caught a 9-yard scoring pass from Kevin Lorello, who completed 12 of 26 passes for 122 yards. Travis Bessell's conversion run tied the game. Griffith caught six passes for 66 yards.
Dando returned a Mohawk fumble 75 yards. The Warriors tied the game in the fourth quarter when Bryan Bantassel scored on a three-yard run.
Bessell led Mohawk with 86 yards on 17 rushes.
Sharon 20, Reynolds 0
REYNOLDS, Pa. -- Marcus Smith scored touchdowns on runs of 20 and 41 yards and Justin Turnbaugh caught a 14-yard TD pass from D.J. Burke as Sharon won its first game after two losses.
Sharon took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and pushed it to 12-0 by halftime in the Mercer County Athletic Conference opener.
The Tigers rolled up 320 yards. Smith, a senior tailback, accounted for 145 of Sharon's 207 rushing yards on 24 carries.
On Sharon's last TD, Mike Bochert caught a conversion pass from Burke to cap a nine-play drive.
Burke completed six of 11 passes for 113 yards while Turnbaugh had five receptions for 103 yards.
Sharon registered six sacks on Reynolds quarterback Jason Shaffer.
Reynolds netted 46 yards on the ground and 56 in the air.
Hickory 39, Mercer 0
MERCER, Pa. -- With an outstanding defense that limited Mercer to 112 yards, Hickory won the Mercer County Athletic Conference opener between the teams as Aaron Brest and Lebio Baldarelli both scored twice.
Hickory (1-2, 1-0) is AAA and Mercer (1-2, 0-1) is AA.
With all of its touchdowns via rush, Brest scored on runs of 13 and 3 yards while Baldarelli tallied from 1 and 4 yards out, respectively.
Rico Cruz punched one in from 3 yards out and the Hornets got their remaining four points on safeties. Ben Woods kicked five PATs.
Brest gained 60 yards on 13 carries, Cruz had 59 on 11 carries, Baldarelli picked up 45 yards on nine carries and quarterback Chad Fitzgerald had 31 yards on three tries.
Hickory had 271 total yards of which 213 came on the ground and 58 in the air on seven of 10 completions by Fitzgerald.
Of Mercer's yardage, 121 was via rush while one pass completion netted minus-9 yards.
Mercer's Alex Jack ran 68 yards before Hickory's Ryan Dearment intercepted a pass and return it to midfield. Jack gained 113 yards on 11 carries.
Luke Erdos, Mercer's top rusher, was injured and didn't play.
