VIENNA New airline mulls local services
The FAA hasn't given any company called Golden Airways permission to run commercial air service, a spokesman said.
THE VINDICATOR, YOUNGSTOWN
VIENNA -- Officials for Golden Airways Inc., described as a Texas-based airline, are meeting today with local airport and development figures to discuss the possibility of commuter flights from the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport.
The Golden Airways officials are the first airline executives to visit the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport this year, said Tom Nolan, the airport director.
They toured the facility Thursday, and are expected to meet with Julie Michael, the governor's regional representative for economic development, later today.
Nolan said he knew little about Golden Airways, which he said recently bought the assets of another airline and planned to operate a commuter service under another name.
The Federal Aviation Administration, however, has not given any company called Golden Airways permission to run commercial air service, said Rowland Herwig, a spokesman.
Dan Prince, an Austintown insurance agent, said he coordinated Golden Airways' visit to the region after discussing the local airport with a friend who works at the company.
Planes
The airline owns both 19- and 50-seat passenger planes and is contemplating passenger service to several cities, he said. He also said the company operates both freight and cargo service out of Dallas.
A list of Golden Airways officials provided by Prince says the company was founded three years ago by Lee Allen, former vice president of Excalibur Aviation Inc.
Bill Clark, Golden Airways president, was president and CEO of US Air Express for 20 years, according to the list. A senior vice president of Golden Airways, Stuart Henning, was vice president of flight operations at Northwest Airlines.
