MAHONING COUNTY
Austintown Community Church, U.S. Route 46, will discuss the topic, "Remembering and Understanding 9/11/01: What Difference Does a Year Make?" at 9 a.m. Sunday. A quiet time of reflection will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. People may come and go as they are able. The bell will toll at the moment when each airplane crashed and when each tower collapsed. At 7 p.m. there will be a worship service of hymns, Scriptures and prayers.
Canfield United Methodist Church, 27 S. Broad St., Canfield, is the site of the city's prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The bells of all Canfield churches are to ring at 9:30 a.m. that day. Churches in the city have been asked to ring their bells on the second Tuesday of every month at 9:30 a.m., the approximate time of the start of terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.
Congregation Rodef Sholom, Elm Street and Woodbine Avenue, with Richard Brown Memorial United Methodist Church, at Rodef Sholom. There will be a memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. in Wick Park.
Federal Plaza Amphitheater, downtown Youngstown. A day of remembrance service will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday with city officials and area pastors.
First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 562 Wick Ave., Youngstown, will have a music service at 5 p.m. and prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday with a fellowship hour after the service. The church will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for anyone who would like to pray or meditate.
Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 162 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown, will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for meditation and prayer Sept. 11. A light lunch will be available after your meditation.
Greenford Christian Church, 11767 Lisbon Road, Greenford, will have a "Remember 9/11" service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Highway Tabernacle, 3000 S. Raccoon Road, Youngstown. A special commemoration prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday will feature music with a unique video that will be used to focus on that day as well as God's promise, a time of prayer for the victim's families and those protecting the country.
Immaculate Conception Church, 811 Oak St., Youngstown, will celebrate a Mass at 9 a.m. Wednesday to observe the first anniversary of the attack.
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4490 Norquest Blvd., Austintown, will have a 9/11 Memorial Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Islamic Society of Greater Youngstown, 1670 Homewood Ave., Youngstown, will have an open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, during which visitors can meet with members of the Islamic community. Dr. Mustansir Mir, a spokesman for the society, will make a presentation at 6 p.m.
Midlothian Area Ministerial Association churches, which include Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Brownlee Woods Presbyterian Church, Faith Community Church, Gibson Heights 2nd United Presbyterian Church, Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, St. Luke Catholic Church, St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, Struthers Methodist Church and Struthers Presbyterian Church, will take part in a joint "9/11 Service of Remembrance" at 7 p.m. Wednesday in St. Luke Catholic Church 5235 South Ave., Boardman. Those churches involved in the association are encouraged to have individual churches open for prayer during the day and to toll their bells at the times of the attacks.
Mount Olivet United Church of Christ, 410 W. South Range Road, North Lima. A community prayer service and Sept. 11 Memorial is at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
New Life Assembly of God, 2250 East Western Reserve Road (at Five Points), Poland. The church will present "Let Freedom Ring," a musical presentation, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The program, which is free, features a series of vignettes depicting a typical day on the job before an explosion occurs. Through a variety of encounters, the office employees learn what it means to lay down their lives for their friends. The original musical drama was written by Pastor Dan Lund and presented in June. It was rewritten and the music was adapted for the 9/11 anniversary. The pastor also wrote the title song.
St. Charles Borromeo Parish, 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman, will host an interfaith community prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday to pray for victims of the attacks and their families, pray for healing and peace in the world and unite in solidarity as God's people. Refreshments will follow. The Red Cross will also hold a blood drive from 1 to 7 p.m. at the church.
St. Columba Cathedral, 154. W. Wood St., Youngstown, will celebrate the memory of the victims of the terrorist attacks and their families at a 12:10 p.m. Mass. Prayers will be offered for peace.
St. John's Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., Youngstown, will have a Holy Eucharist service with the choirs from the Episcopal churches in the area at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Tabernacle Church, 2432 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown, will have a community worship and prayer service from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The service will present the Gospel's message of a relationship with a God who turns tragedy into triumph, and reflect on how people can be a part of turning tragedy to triumph in the community, country and world. St. Luke Church, 5235 South Ave., Boardman, will celebrate Sept. 11 as a day of mourning, a day of remembering, a day of prayer and a day of hope with a series of events: a 7 a.m. Mass for peace and justice; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.,, church open for quiet reflection; 8:48 to 5:25 p.m., bells will toll marking the times as events as unfolded one year ago; a 12:10 p.m. Mass for peace and justice; 6:30 p.m. music by St. Luke's music ministry; 7 p.m., joint prayer service with all churches in the Midlothian Area Ministerial Association.
Victory Christian Center, 15 Bedford Road (three miles East of Youngstown on U.S. Route 422), Lowellville, will hold a special community service at 7 p.m. Wednesday to remember the terrorist attack on America. Testimonies will be heard from a fireman and policeman. Local police departments, fire departments, paramedics and EMT units are invited to wear uniforms and bring work vehicles to display in the Family Life Centre parking lot. St. Christine Roman Catholic Church, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown, will host a joint service with churches from the Canfield Road area, including Christ United Presbyterian Church, First Free Methodist Church, New Covenant Worship Center and Zion Lutheran Church, at 7 p.m. Sept. 11. The guest speaker, Bishop Marcus Miller, Bishop of the Northeast Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. A joint choir will perform special music. A coffee hour fellowship time will follow the service.
Smith Corners United Methodist Church, 3000 S. Canfield-Niles Road, Austintown, will hold a memorial service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
Trinity United Methodist Church's Chapel of Friendly Bells, 30 W. Front Street, Youngstown, is the site of a community interfaith "A Moment for Remembrance" from 8:30 to 8:50 a.m. Wednesday. The event is co-sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Association of Churches and the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation. The event will feature an observance of a moment of silence at 8:45 a.m., the time the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center. Other than the moment of silence, the gathering will include no additional formal programming.
Western Reserve Baptist Church, 8590 Hitchcock Road, Boardman, will have a community memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Refreshments will follow.
Wickliffe Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 3939 Potomac Ave., Youngstown, will have a Sept. 11 commemoration service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
TRUMBULL COUNTY
Cortland Trinity Baptist Church, 2576 McCleary Jacoby Road, Cortland, will hold a "9/11 Remembrance Service" at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The service will include patriotic music and a video tribute entitled, "When the Worst Thing Happens." The message will be "Where Was God on Sept. 11?" Those who protect, defend and serve our community will be honored.
First Baptist Church of Howland, 8957 E. Market St., will hold a "9-11 Remembrance Service" at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Representatives of local fire, police, military and American Red Cross will participate. A candlelight service and prayer vigil will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday for those who lost loved ones and for those who are still fighting.
First Christian Church, 130 E. Broadway Ave., Girard. A service of remembrance, hope and healing will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The service will center on prayer and God's power to heal the wounds of all nations.
Girard First United Methodist Church, 22 N. Market St., Girard, will have a "Remembering 9/11" service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday.
Harvest Point Church, 1824 Salt Springs Road, Warren. A service at 10 a.m. Sunday will honor 9/11 heroes. There will be a message, "A Time to Remember."
Howland Community Church, 198 Niles-Cortland Road S.E., Warren, will hold an ecumenical "Service of Remembrance and Reconciliation" at 7 p.m. Sunday. Participants will include Cortland Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Bazetta Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Temple Beth Israel, Howland Community Church, Howland Township Chief of Police, Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church and Third Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Warren. In addition to a candlelighting and prayers for those who were lost Sept. 11, the service will include a prayer for shalom (peace) and a litany for renewal. Worship material will draw upon Protestant, Orthodox and Jewish traditions.
Newton Falls United Methodist Church, 336 Ridge Rd., Newton Falls, is the site of the Newton Falls Ministerial Association's two community worship services Wednesday. "A Service of Remembrance and Hope" will be at 9 a.m. and at 7 p.m. Call (330) 872-1564.
Ohltown United Methodist Church, 2001 Ohltown Road, Mineral Ridge, will have a memorial service for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and their families at 9:45 a.m. Sunday.
Vienna High School Gymnasium will be the location of a community "Service of Remembrance" at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Vienna United Methodist Church, Vienna Presbyterian, Fowler United Methodist Church and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church will participate.
Wildare United Methodist Church, 7211 North Park Extension, Cortland, will offer a memorial prayer walk (labyrinth) will be from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. It will also include a time of meditation and prayer. The congregation will hold a service of dedication of the labyrinth after the service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
COLUMBIANA COUNTY
American Legion Post 290, area churches and citizens will observe Patriot Day with the theme "We Will Remember" on Wednesday. Pastor David Conrad of Jerusalem Lutheran Church has invited all area clergy to ring their church bells and to join him at the noontime commemoration service in front of the Log House in the center of Columbiana. Bells will ring to commemorate the airplanes' crashing at 8:45 a.m., the north tower of the World Trade Center at 9:03, the south tower at 9:43 and American Airlines Flight 177 at 10 a.m.
First Friends Church, 1028 Jennings Ave., Salem, will have a concert of prayer for the 9/11 victims and families called "A Time to Remember" at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. First United Methodist Church, 210 S. Main St., Columbiana. A commemoration service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 415 S. Main St., Columbiana, will have a special liturgy at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Sunday called "Let Me Fall, Let Me Climb" dedicated to those who were forced to jump from the World Trade Towers. The church will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday so people may pray or light a candle.
St. Patrick Parish, 167 W. Main St., Leetonia, will be celebrating Mass at 7 p.m. Wednesday in memory of the victims and families of the twin towers, the Pentagon and those in Pennsylvania. Church bells will toll three times for each site in memory and prayer. The community is invited.
ASHTABULA
First Assembly of God, 2300 Austinburg Road, Ashtabula. A special memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday will feature special music, patriotic music and special prayers as well as recognition of firefighters, police, military and civil servants. Call (440) 275-7720.
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1089 E. State St., Salem, along with Emmanuel Lutheran Church, also of Salem, at Holy Trinity: A National Day of Remembrance service featuring patriotic hymns, Scripture reading and prayer will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to honor those who gave their lives one year ago at The World Trade Center, the Pentagon and near Somerset, Pa.
PENNSYLVANIA
Lebanon United Presbyterian Church, 2233 Mercer-West Middlesex Road, West Middlesex, will observe Remembrance Day will be observed at 11 a.m. Sunday with prayer for the United States and the community. The church will be open all day Wednesday for prayer, and a special service of prayer and remembrance will be at 7:30 p.m.
