BOARDMAN Video store buys building
THE VINDICATOR, YOUNGSTOWN
BOARDMAN -- Build it and it will be used -- eventually.
After several years of sitting vacant, a building on the corner of Market Street and Indianola Road built for -- but never used by -- the Rite Aid company is finally getting an occupant.
Family Video, a Illinois-based company has bought the building for $800,000. A face-lift on the building began earlier this month. No opening date has been announced by the company.
Township zoning officials said the company will use about 75 percent of the building to rent videos. The remaining southern portion of the building will be leased out.
Site history
The building was being built in 1999 by Rite Aid, but construction came to a standstill when the company said it ran out of money. At that time, the company said drastic stock value declines played a factor in its decision.
After a threat of being cited for zoning code violations, the company finished the outside of the building, put in sidewalks and curbs and completed the landscaping.
The inside was never finished, and the building sat as an empty shell for three years.
Firefighters were called to the building in 2001 for a small fire that caused minimum damage. A small amount of a petroleum-based product, possibly roofing tar, was found burning by itself on the concrete floor in the south end of the building.
