AUSTINTOWN -- A Youngstown man was bitten by a police dog here Monday as he was arrested on warrants on charges of burglary, aggravated assault and fleeing and eluding a police officer.
Kevin C. Queener, 37, of Bryant Street, was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center after he was bitten on his left arm by the dog. Information about the warrants was not immediately available.
Police said they received a call from Hubbard police stating that Queener was at a Webb Road address. They searched the home and determined that Queener was in a crawl space.
Queener refused to surrender even after he was warned that a police dog would be released into the crawl space, police said.
The dog was released, grabbed Queener by the arm and held him until he was arrested.
City's trick-or-treat
YOUNGSTOWN -- The police department will increase the number of officers on patrol during trick-or-treat hours from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Additional traffic officers and Weed and Seed officers will blanket side streets in neighborhoods where children are expected to be out, increasing police visibility, public awareness and enforcing traffic ordinances, says a department press release.
Officers also will give out treats to youngsters in costume.
Woman attacked
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 33-year-old city woman was treated and released at St. Elizabeth Health Center for stab wounds she suffered after being attacked Monday.
According to police reports, the woman left the YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave., where she is employed, about 11:20 a.m. As she walked east along Rayen, Leroy Williams, 44, a resident of the Rescue Mission, who was also on the sidewalk, dropped his belongings, hurled obscenities at the woman, knocked her to the ground and stabbed her several times with a screwdriver.
Three Ameritech employees and two other witnesses pulled Williams off the victim and restrained him until police arrived, reports said. Rural Metro Ambulance transported the victim to the hospital. She told police that she didn't exchange a word with her attacker and that he was a stranger.
Harvest party
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Harvest Festival Party and Dance for children ages 5 to 12 is set for 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Associated Neighborhood Centers, McGuffey Center. The event aims to provide a safe environment for families who do not want to participate in an outdoor Halloween activity. Games, music and prizes for the best three original costumes that are nonscary are planned. Cost is $1 or 2 canned goods, which will be used for Thanksgiving distribution.
Flu shot clinic
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Visiting Nurse Association of Youngstown is offering a flu shot clinic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the VNA office, 518 E. Indianola Ave. The cost is $15, or traditional Medicare is accepted. Call (330) 782-5606 for more information.
Campbell man facesa charge of robbery
LIBERTY -- A 30-year-old Campbell man was scheduled to be arraigned today in Girard Municipal Court on a charge of robbery.
Scott Alan Johnson of Morley Avenue was in Trumbull County Jail this morning after being arrested in a robbery Monday of Payday Cash Advance, 3950 Belmont Ave.
Employees reported a man walked in about 5 p.m. wearing black clothing and a Halloween mask. They gave him an undetermined amount of cash.
Patrol Officer Pete DeAngelo reported that he noticed a car speeding along Belmont and the driver was wearing black clothing.
Police gave chase until Johnson's car crashed into a ravine. Police found black clothing and $3,904 in the car. The police report does not list the mask as being recovered.
