No health threat found at school

Tuesday, October 29, 2002

LISBON -- State inspectors have found nothing so far in McKinley Elementary School that would be making some of its pupils ill.
Inspectors with the Ohio Bureau of Worker's Compensation, Division of Health and Safety, recently provided the school district with the preliminary findings from their examination of the building, Superintendent Charles McShane said today.
They discovered no material or situation that would be responsible for making some pupils sick, McShane said.
The inspection was prompted by complaints from some parents of McKinley pupils who have said their children are suffering from headaches, asthma, skin rash, throat irritation and other symptoms.
Inspectors will return to McKinley to do some additional sampling when the weather turns colder to determine if there's any problem stemming from the heating and ventilation system, McShane said.
But the inspectors have said they are doubtful that they'll find anything, he added.
School officials will meet with inspectors in coming days to discuss what steps need to be taken next, McShane said.
Attendance is normal at the school, which has about 600 pupils in kindergarten through sixth grade, McShane said.
