CANFIELD Township trustees will meet about zoning change request

CANFIELD -- Township trustees will have a special meeting at 10 a.m. Nov. 14 to vote on a zoning change that would allow the construction of office buildings, a hotel, and a retail center on U.S. 224.
CTW Development Corp. of Boardman wants the township to extend its boundary for business development so that it is 1,000 feet from U.S. 224 between Summit Drive and South Raccoon Road. The township allows business development up to 500 feet from U.S. 224.
Two years ago, township voters rejected a request to move the boundary for the property by 300 feet by a near 2-to-1 margin.

CTW also wants to change the zoning of a 57-acre parcel south of U.S. 224 between Summit Drive and South Raccoon Road from agricultural to residential. The property is slated to become the site of a 64-unit condominium development and several single-family homes.
About 45 residents attended a hearing Monday night to discuss the requests. Some residents spoke in favor of the development.
Other residents have said they felt the township doesn't need more commercial development, and that CTW should build houses as a buffer along the back yards of homes on Summit Drive.
Trustees said that during the next two weeks, they will work with the residents and the developer to address some of the residents' concerns.
The township zoning commission has recommended approving the zoning change. A unanimous vote of the trustees would be needed to overturn the commission's recommendation.
On Monday, the trustees also voted to cancel their next regular meeting, which had been scheduled Nov. 11, or Veterans Day. Their next meeting will be Nov. 25.
